Ardith was born in Alger, MI on November 30, 1932, daughter of the late William and Evelyn (Dunn) Goodroe. She spent her early years in the small town of Sterling, MI, before moving to Ypsilanti, MI, where she lived for three years. Ardith then moved to AuGres, MI, where she graduated from high school. After completing studies at Northeastern School of Commerce in Bay City, MI, Ardith’s first job, at the age of 18, was secretary to the Dean of Women at then Central Michigan College. From there, Ardith worked at a Bay City law firm and was later employed at Dow Chemical Company in Midland, MI. After moving to Flint, MI, she worked for several attorneys and law firms until her retirement. In 1990, Fr. Sullivan asked Ardith to help in the office at St. Matthew Catholic Church, where she remained for seven years. St. Matthew’s was a major part of her life in her later years. In addition to the office work, Ardith also served as a Eucharistic minister, lector, choir member and secretary of the Altar Society. Ardith had a great affection for all the Augustinian priests she knew and worked with over the years. She was an avid dog lover, especially the larger breeds. Over the years, Ardith adopted Preston from Animal Control, Lady from the Humane Society, Samantha and her beloved Maude from Fenton Adopt-A-Pet. To Ardith, there is no reason to spend big money for some pedigreed show dog when there are so many good animals needing homes. Please support dog shelters. After being divorced for several years, Ardith was lucky and blessed to meet Herb Clark, who was her best friend and companion for 25 years until his death in 2005. Herb’s death left a void in Ardith’s life that nothing could replace. However, her wonderful friends at St. Matthew Catholic Church, and Maude, were so important in making life enjoyable and fun. Thank you, Fr. Fred, all my Greg’s, Cara and all of you for the good times.
Although her immediate family was gone, Ardith was especially close to her dear friends, Betty Noonan and JoAnn Houston and their families. Ardith was always included in their family gatherings. Finally, a most important part of Ardith’s life and great blessing was her life-long friend, Anne Sweet Hoag, who was like a sister from the time they were three years old. Ardith was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn Goodroe in 1978; her father, William Goodroe in 2000 and her dear Herb Clark in 2005.
