Ken Lafferty passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2020.

Ken was known for his great sense of humor, work ethic, and dedication to those he loved. Ken retired from General Motors after a 30 year career as a tool and die maker. Retirement did not slow him down, though. He had a talent for building and fixing, and was always working on a project or planning one. While some keep books on their nightstands, Ken’s was crowded with the tools that he reluctantly set down only when it was time to sleep. Whether practical or creative - helping his stepdaughter with the technical aspects of a sculpture, for example, or crafting perfectly pitched wind chimes - his work was precise and impeccable.

Ken was a born helper. His wife Billie recalls how they first met. She had moved in across the street from him and was trying to get a heavy piece of furniture into the house. Later, he admitted that he had been waiting for an excuse to meet her. All that she knew that day was that he appeared at her moment of need, like a knight with a luscious mullet, and insisted on taking care of it. Although his hairstyle evolved, his devotion to helping her never changed.

The two of them celebrated their new relationship with a trip to the Caribbean, which awakened in Ken a passion for travel that continued for the rest of his life. He loved to seek adventure and go off the beaten path, and was particularly fond of Alaska. His charisma and humor drew people to him, and on every vacation, he collected a few new friends. One recalls a time when their group checked into their third story hotel rooms, and saw an outdoor swimming pool directly below the windows. Ken, a springboard diver, gave a split second’s serious consideration to starting the vacation with a swan dive for their entertainment. Thankfully, he did not, but she recalls that this was exactly the type of humor and fun that he always brought to their gatherings.

He was a friend to all, but through his entire life, his most cherished relationship was with his mother, Hazel. He also treasured his sisters and valued loyalty to them above all else. If anything ever went wrong, they knew that “Butch” would be right over.

Ken is survived by his loving wife, Billie Loree; stepchildren, Alexander and Taylor Priest; his mother, Martha Hazel Lafferty; sisters, Terry Thorpe (Dennis), Krystal Julliet (Christopher), Sheila Dahm (Robert), and Vicki Creed (Jeff); nieces and nephews; and granddaughters Abigail and Veronica Lafferty. We take great pleasure in imagining his joyful reunion with his father Roy and son Shawn.

A memorial service will be planned at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ken's name to the American Cancer Society or Ascension At Home Hospice.
