Thompson, James Gilbert, of Flushing, age 91, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 9, 2026. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, July 17, 2026, at Caterer Family (formerly Rossell) Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
James was born in Flint, Michigan on August 8, 1934, the son of Frederick Gilbert and Ruth Eugenia (Phillips) Thompson. He graduated from Flushing High School, Class of 1952. James married Rosemary Fogas on August 27, 1955, at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Flushing, Michigan.
James proudly served in the Naval Reserves for many years. He began his career, with General Motors, as a Tool and Die apprentice and was a supervisor, retiring after 35 years with Fisher Body in Grand Blanc, Michigan. James was a joiner, always finding a way to be involved. In his early years, James enjoyed racing his car and was a member of the Sports Car Club of America. He was a member of D.A.N.K. - the German American Club, Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and The Clan Campbell Society of North America. In his masonic organization affiliation, he was a Knights Templar, a 32nd degree Mason and Most Worshipful Master. He was an active member of the Flushing Masonic Lodge #232 F&AM; Dunedin, Florida, Masonic Lodge #192 F&AM and Flint Council #56 R&SM.
James enjoyed spending the winter months in Belleair Bluffs, Florida. Throughout his life, he enjoyed shooting sports, painting, drawing and was an excellent cartoonist. His greatest joy was his family and he was proud of his children and grandchildren. He was a very caring gentleman, always offering the best advice to his family. James never met a stranger and was a great conversationalist. His most consistent hobby was investing and formed many lasting friendships. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic and his sharp, dapper suits and ties, he always dressed to the “nines”.
James is survived by his children, Lisa King of Flushing, Dr. Frederick Thompson and wife, Kathy, of Linden; grandchildren, Nicholas King of Las Vegas, Nathan King of Flushing, Maxwell Thompson of Flushing, Frances Thompson of Westland, Harrison Thompson of Flint. Extended family; David King and wife, Sarah and children. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Rosemary; son, Stephen Gilbert Thompson; daughter-in-law, Sharyn Thompson; sons-in-law, Ronald King and Randy L. Smith; and his parents.
