Harriet W. Maybaugh

Just 22 days short of celebrating her centenarian birthday, Harriet was called by God to his Heavenly Paradise on Friday, March 9, 2018 after a brief three day stay at Memorial Healthcare Center.

Funeral services will be held 11am Tuesday, March 13th at Salem Lutheran Church in Owosso with Pastor James Bare officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends beginning one hour before the service at the church. Nelson-House Funeral Homes-Owosso Chapel is coordinating the arrangements.

Harriet was born March 31, 1918 in Sisseton, South Dakota, the daughter of Albert and Wilhelmina “Minnie” (Laun) Sandman. She spent most of her youth growing up in Winnett, Montana.

A few years after graduating from Winnett High School in 1937 she ventured off to work at the Navy Shipyard near Puget Sound, Washington, but in doing so she met Donald H. Maybaugh who was stationed nearby while serving in the U.S. Army. They married on April 6, 1943 in Bremerton, Washington. He predeceased her on October 27, 1966. Together in 1944, they had one son James, who predeceased her on July 21, 2000.

While her husband was serving in World War II, she relocated to Owosso, Michigan and started her career working at Universal Electric Plant I, later transferring to Plant II. She retired after 36 years working the line and in shipping. It has been told, she lost her desire to obtain a drivers’ license at the age of 15 after spending the afternoon with two of her brothers who were given the task to teach her the fine art of operating an automobile. From that point forward she walked most places she needed to be, which everyone agrees was instrumental to her good health and longevity. She was an active member of a local travel club, taking many trips throughout the United States and Canada. She also treated many friends and relatives with her talents at making beautiful quilts.

Harriet is survived by her sister-in-law Clara Sandman; as well as special nieces and nephews-Kay, June, Lynn and Wayne grandnieces and grandnephews. Beside her husband and son, she was also predeceased by her daughter-in-law Beverly (Mattes) Maybaugh and siblings Alberta (Gerald) Gunlickson, Lloyd Sandman, Harold (Peggy) Sandman; Helen (Anthony) Lamont, Carl (Virgie) Sandman, Howard (LoRee) Sandman.

During a 14 month period before her passing, Harriet resided at County View in which she received excellent care by all of its staff, especially caregiver Matthew Beck.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Salem Lutheran School Athletic Program.
