Lavern A. Thompson (1935–2025)

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” I Timothy 1:17 (NIV)

A man of faith, integrity, strength, knowledge, patience, and grace has entered into his eternal reward. Lavern Alton Thompson, 89, of Grand Blanc, Michigan, peacefully died on August 25, 2025, with his four children by his side.

Born in Flint, Michigan, to Glenn and Pearl (Canfield) Thompson, Lavern’s early interests included drawing, photography, playing the trumpet, marching in the high school band, and drafting. After graduating from Central High School (Flint, MI) in 1954, he attended Flint Junior College, earning an Associate’s Degree in Business. In 1958, he joined the National Guard; married Carolyn (Hammar) in 1959; and the first of his four children arrived in 1960. He worked for Flint Fireproof Moving & Storage, but spent the majority of his career as Pierce Furniture’s Service Manager in Flint, Michigan. When Pierce Furniture closed he worked for Ethan Allen and Michael Foran Interior Designs in similar roles until he retired.

Lavern had many talents. He was extremely skilled in woodworking, electrical work, and construction. In fact, he constructed the house in which he and Carolyn started their family and remained living there until limitations made it necessary to move to assisted living. Any project he touched was marked with his quality craftsmanship. He was generous with his talents and applied his “know-how” and abilities to repair or build almost anything. Time spent working with him was more than building a project, it created precious opportunities to witness his skill and talent, learn his approach to obstacles, and offered countless hours of laughter and fellowship.

While Lavern had many interests, his favorite activity was spending time with his family. He enjoyed trips up north where he typically had some type of project underway as well. He also enjoyed listening to a wide variety of Christian radio, watching western classics, DIY programs, and Hallmark movies. When he was unable to attend church regularly, he tuned into several church broadcasts on Sunday and throughout the week.

Lavern served at Berean Baptist Church in many capacities (usher, Awana Commander, Deacon) during the decades he was a faithful member. Lavern had a long personal relationship with the Lord. The legacy he leaves behind is the importance of a family centered on Jesus Christ; shaped and influenced by the Word of God. His life, lived serving, loving, and trusting the Lord, leaves us with eternal hope. “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” Deuteronomy 6:5-7 (ESV)

Lavern is preceded in death by his beloved wife Carolyn (Hammar), his parents Glenn and Pearl, brothers Glenn Jr. and Marvin, and his second wife Barbara (Eakin).

He is survived by his children; Steven (Dawn) Thompson, Alan (Deborah) Thompson, Kenneth (Julie) Thompson, and Deborah (Henry) Biar. His grandchildren; Kara, Nicholas, Samantha (Jacob), Dylan (Haylee), Zachery (Elizabeth), Emma, Cole, and Logan. His great-grandchildren; Skylar, Kayla, Jackson, Graham, Benaiah, and Maverick. His brother; Richard (Jean), and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings can be made to Berean Baptist Church through Online Giving or by mailing a check directly to the church at: 6705 Rustic Ridge Trail, Grand Blanc, MI 48439.

“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” I Corinthians 15:55 (ESV)
