Aurilla Hale Dennings, affectionately known to all as “Cookie,” passed away peacefully at her home in Swartz Creek, Michigan, on April 21, 2025, at the age of 91. A devoted mother, loving wife, selfless grandmother, and dear friend, Cookie left behind a legacy built on love, strength, and quiet grace.
Born on August 15, 1933, in High Point, North Carolina, Cookie was the daughter of Ella (Bare) Wall and Willie Edgar Wall. She grew up with her beloved siblings, Knolon Wall and Hilda (Wall) Powell, all of whom have preceded her in death.
Cookie graduated from Hasty High School in North Carolina and attended High Point University for two and a half years before moving to Michigan. She went on to complete her training at Michigan Cosmetology School in Flint, graduating in 1957. She initially ran a successful in-home beauty shop but later embarked on a nearly three-decade career at AC Spark Plug (General Motors), where she worked as a supervisor for 27 and a half years. She was admired for her toughness, work ethic, and never-give-up attitude—qualities that defined her both in and out of the workplace.
Cookie’s heart was always rooted in her family. She was married to the love of her life, Gordon Max Dennings, for 66 wonderful years before his passing. Together, they raised a close-knit family that continues to carry her legacy of love and resilience. She is survived by her sons, Dwight (Jenny) Dennings and Jeffrey (Natalie) Dennings; her grandchildren, Laurin (Josh) Hoffman, Dustin (Harlee) Dowen, Devin Dennings, Brandon (Jesse) Gray, Emily Gray, Rodney (Rebekah) Dennings, Kenneth Dennings, Carol Dennings, and Matthew Dennings; and her great-grandchildren, Nora, Eira, and Vera Hoffman, Edwyn, Robin, and Damian Gray, Annabelle, Lucy, Maddie Tam, and Corvin Gray; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Cookie was a gifted gardener with a true green thumb, and she enjoyed crafting throughout the years. But more than anything, she loved caring for others. She was the kind of person who gave without asking for anything in return, always there with a listening ear, a handwritten postcard, or a smile that could brighten even the darkest day.
To know Cookie was to love her. Her sense of humor, her strength, and her boundless compassion touched everyone she met. She was our matriarch, our rock, our guiding light—and she leaves behind a space that can never truly be filled.
“Oh, how we cried the day you left us.” But grief is the price we pay for love, and Cookie gave us a lifetime of it. We’ll carry her spirit with us always.
“We still love you even if we can’t see you… can’t wait to see you in heaven.”
Forever our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and everyone’s “Cookie”.
Celebration of Gordon & Cookie Dennings at a later date. Please contact the family for details. |
