Born: 10/19/1918
Died: 1/19/2015
Age: 96
Community: Flushing, MI

Krch-Hooks, Bessie, age 96, of Flushing, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 19, 2015. She was cherished by her family and friends for her giving nature and sunny disposition. We will miss her sweet smile and sense of humor. Bessie was born October 19, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio, to John and Margaret Korniet. In her youth, as a member of the Sokol Lodge of Greater Cleveland, she participated in gymnastic competitions and made many lifelong friends. In May of 1942 she married Louis P. Krch. She was an Army bride, then a devoted mother and homemaker who supported Lou’s career as a music educator and violinist while surrounding her children with love and laughter. Bessie enjoyed baking and sewing and, as always, caring for others. She was a mother and grandmother to many more children than her own. Lou passed away in 1983 after 41 years of marriage. She filled the void in her life by continuing her education and spending time square dancing with friends. There she met Carl R. Hooks who she married in August 1997. They spent many years traveling, dancing, and entertaining friends. Bessie loved Carl’s adult children and enjoyed spending time with their families as well. Carl passed away in 2010 and she spent the remainder of her life residing at American House North where she became close friends with Marie Hayden, Pearl Pahl, and Georgena Usher.
Bessie is survived by daughter Margaret Cole and husband Cory, of Newport News, VA; daughter Louise Zimmerman and husband Mark, of Flint; son L.P. and wife SueAnn Krch residing in Marysville, Ohio; and son-in-law Michael Colantonio of Coconut Creek, Florida. She was blessed with grandchildren both by blood and by marriage – Angela Colantonio Waite, Shelly Colantonio, Rachel Zimmerman, Sarah Zimmerman, Aaron Wick, Caleb Wick, and Brittany Schissler. Her second family included Carl Hooks, Jr. and wife Karen, Gail and husband Bruce Lannon, Judith and husband Jim Wilson (both deceased), Sharilyn Crow, and their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by nieces and nephews Barbara Arndt, Sandra Loucka, David Kramer, Diane Sandstrom, and cousin Margaret Brennan. She cherished as family her dear friend Suzanne Arnold McGee and her daughters Keri, Nicole, and Katie. Bessie was preceded in death by her sister Emily, and her brother Walter.
Visitation is at Swartz Funeral Home on Friday, January 23 from 4-8 pm. Services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Ballenger Highway Saturday, January 24th at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Louis P. Krch Scholarship Fund through the Foundation for MCC, 1401 E. Court St, Flint, MI 48503.
