ANDERSON, Richard “Barney” – Of Burton, age 93, passed away Monday, February 9, 2026, at Henry Ford Rochester Hospital.
Funeral service will be held 2pm Friday, February 13, 2026, at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint,
Dr. Max B. Hayden officiating.
Visitation 12pm Friday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Burial in Sunset Hills Cemetery.
Barney was born in Flint on June 11, 1932, the son of the late Leland and Laura H. (Robbins) Anderson and resided in the Flint area all of his life.
He married Ruth A. Anderson on April 11, 1964.
Barney proudly served in the US Army from 1952 to1954 with the 2nd Infantry Division, 15th Field Artillery Regiment during The Korean War and was a member of VFW Post 2777 and DAV Chapter Genesee #3.
Barney's interests included researching his family genealogy, landscaping projects and spending lots of time with his children and grandchildren, never missing a birthday, holiday or the annual trip to Port Austin. He especially enjoyed taking Ruthie to Frankenmuth for dinner, long walks on Main St and dancing to Polka music. He also loved watching Univ. of Michigan Wolverines football, boxing, and the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings.
Barney showed his true mettle when he became Ruthie's sole caregiver for many years during her battle with Alzheimer's.
Surviving are 4 children, Timothy L. (Lisa K.), Jeffrey W. (Jennifer L.) and Michael P. Anderson, Melissa G. (Steven J.) Slater; 6 grandchildren, Zachary R., Erik M., Kylie E., and Matthew J. Anderson, Tyler S. and Jordyn A. Slater; sisters-in-law Norene A. Gusie, Ila and Sharon Anderson. Many cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth A. Anderson, his sisters Ramona J. Kirkpatrick and Dorothy A. Thorsby; brothers Charles B., Stanley M., and Gary E. Anderson; brothers-in-law Paul J. Krusell and James K. Kirkpatrick; sisters-in-law Avon Kahl and Sheila M. Anderson-Landesman; special friends Jack D. Frederick and Donald Carroll.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association as a continuation of support to help fight the disease that took Ruthie from him and his family. Please also consider the charities that Barney supported, including Boys Town, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, USO, VFW and Chapter #3 DAV.
