Smith, Randy L., of Flushing, age 73, died Thursday, May 21, 2026, at McLaren-Flint surrounded by his family.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 12 noon on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Rossell Funeral Home. Fr. Roy Horning will officiate. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at noon. An inurnment will immediately follow at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Randy was born in Flint, Michigan, on January 28, 1953, the son of the late George and Lois (McKay) Smith. He was a Grand Blanc High School graduate, Class of 1971. Randy began his law enforcement career with the Argentine Township Police Department in 1974. He began his service with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department in 1977 and honorably retired as a Lieutenant after 30 years. He continued his dedication to law enforcement by serving an additional 10 years with the Otisville Police Department. Randy served as Union President and was active within the Genesee County Democratic Party for many years.
Randy was a stoic man, a man of few words, but he had a powerful presence. He found peace being outdoors, especially at his cabin on the AuSable River, spending weekends with his family. He was an avid supporter of the Special Olympics — Wertz Warriors and never missed a golfing event. He had a deep appreciation for classic cars and hot rods. He was a die-hard Detroit Tigers fan, spending limitless time enjoying the games. To his many friends, he was known as “Red.” He will be deeply missed by all who loved him, including his faithful dog, Asher.
Randy is survived by his partner of 30 years, Lisa King; son, Randy A. Smith; step-sons, Nicholas and Nathan King of Las Vegas and Flushing; step-daughters, Nicole Thomason of Davison and Mandi Hilla of Flint; step-grandchildren, Emma Clark of Davison, Nathan (Emily) Hilla of Lansing, Jacob Hilla of Grand Blanc, and Aiden and Evan Smith of Columbiaville; brother, Kevin Smith of Denver; brother-in-law, Frederick (Kathy) Thompson of Linden; and extended family, David (Sarah) King of Swartz Creek.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lois Smith, and his brother Craig Smith. In lieu of flowers, donations in Randy’s memory are suggested to:
