Mr. John Paul Hlavacs, age 94, entered eternal life on April 20, 2025, at Angel Manor of Clio. The family extends their sincere thanks and appreciation to Sadie and the staff at Angel Manor, as well as Residential Hospice, especially nurse Sasha, for the wonderful care provided for John.
John was born in Flint, Michigan, the only child of John J. & Katherine Hlavacs (née Fejedelem). He grew up in Arbela Township and graduated from Millington High School with the class of 1949. John honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. Afterwards, he returned home and began his career as a millwright with General Motors. He met the former Ms. Virginia “Genia” Szatkowski; the two dated, fell-in-love, and were wed on May 3, 1958. They celebrated over 66 years of marriage, raised their three children, and shared countless memories. John was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Korean War Veterans, and was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed walking his dogs, tending to his garden, and his Model-H John Deere tractor. Above all, he loved his family and being a grandfather to his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Hlavacs; son, Keith John (Anne Lazowski) Hlavacs; daughters, Cindy Short, and Colleen Ann (Martin) Ochs; grandchildren: Joel Gregory Short, Devin Ann Ochs, and Steven Andrew Ochs; great-granddaughter, Charleigh Rylynn Short; as well as extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, George Gregory Short; and other family members.
John’s family will receive visitors at Hanlin Funeral Home in Millington from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2025; the praying of the rosary will begin at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish in Vassar at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025; additional visitation at church from 10 a.m. until the time of mass. Fr. Josepaul Pasala will preside. The rite of committal and military funeral honors will be held in Flint Memorial Park, Mt. Morris.
