THORSBY, Alfred S. “Alf” – of Montrose, age 89, died Saturday, March 30, 2019 at his residence. Funeral services will be held 11AM, Thursday, April 4, 2019 at the Montrose United Methodist Church, 158 E. State Street, Montrose. Pastor Hal Phillips officiating. Burial to follow in Montrose Township Cemetery. Family will receive visitors at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Montrose on Wednesday from 2PM until 8PM and at the church on Thursday from 10AM until the time of service at 11AM. Memorial contributions may be made to Montrose United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
Alf was born January 13, 1930 in Montrose, Michigan to the late Alfred and Leona (Bruson) Thorsby. He graduated from Montrose High School in 1948. After graduation, Alf played 1 year of professional baseball for the Philadelphia Athletics. He married Jean Shook on March 25, 1961 in Montrose. Alf proudly served in the United States Navy from 1951 until 1953. He was the owner and operator of Riverside Market in Montrose from 1953 until 1997. Alf was a member of the Montrose United Methodist Church. He belonged to Masonic Lodge #428 F. & A.M. in Montrose. Alf served 19 years on the board of directors for Country Fresh Dairy. He served several years on the board for Montrose State Bank and also a term on the Montrose school board. Alf enjoyed baseball, local sports, and spending time at the store. If he wasn’t working, Alf enjoyed mowing the lawn and spending time with family.
Surviving are: Wife of 58 years, Jean Thorsby; Children: Bradley (Lora) Thorsby, Barry Thorsby, and Patrick Thorsby; Grandchildren: Malary Thorsby and Ava Thorsby; Sisters: Mary Carlson, Peggy Poag, Cheryl White and many other nieces and nephews.
