EGGERT, Ralph Herman – Of Flint, age 99, died Monday, January 15, 2018 at his residence.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Rev. Dr. Julius Del Pino officiating.
Burial in New Haven Township Cemetery in Sumner, Michigan.
Visitation 2-7 p.m. Friday, January 19, 2018 and 12 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018 until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Ralph was born in Edmore, Michigan on April 12, 1918
On December 20, 1941 he married Genevieve Terry and they had been married for 76 years.
He graduated from Michigan State in 1943, with a BA Degree. He took ROTC for 3 years and at the end of college was put in the Army Wisconsin- Georgia and on to Camp Hood Texas and received a Commission as 2nd Lieutenant all in 1943.
He worked with the troops getting them ready for overseas duty until April, 1945. When he was sent to Japan the war ended before he arrived. He was the first American to step foot on Japanese soil as he led his troop from the boat. He was there 1½ years, coming back as a 1st Lieutenant.
Mr. Eggert started teaching at McKinley Jr. High in 1948, Science and Physical Education for 27 years and he had a Master’s Degree.
As they started the Burton VFW #2777, he was one of the charter members, very active until age got the best of him.
Surviving are wife, Genevieve (Terry) Eggert;
8 children, Melvin, deceased;
Philip,
Terry (Fellis),
Robert (Renee),
Richard, Jackie,
Pamela,
Kevin (Julie);
12 grandchildren; one deceased;
13 great-grandchildren.
