James Newell Leighton, lovingly known as Jim, of Flint, Michigan, passed away on February 21, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on September 26, 1955, to Lucy and Thomas Leighton, Jim lived a life defined by kindness, hard work, and devotion to those he loved.

Jim was a proud graduate of Carman High School, Class of 1973. Throughout his life, he was known as a dedicated and dependable worker, spending several years as a member of the Carpenters Union before later retiring from the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office. No matter the role, Jim approached his work with integrity, humility, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Above all else, Jim was a helper. He found joy in lending a hand, offering support, and showing up for others whenever he was needed. He loved camping, being outdoors, and creating lasting memories with family and friends—moments that will be cherished forever by those who knew him.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Leighton; his mother, Lucy Leighton; and his sister, Sharon Leighton?Gibbons.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie Leighton; his daughter, Jennifer (Matt) Guzman; step-daughter, Crystal Watts; twin sister, Susan Anderson; brother, Charles (Jeannine) Leighton; adopted son, Christopher Jones; and his dear friend, Norm Coleman. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Matthew Guzman, Maverick Guzman, and Olivia Watts.

Jim also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews: Amy (Matt) Cherry, Luce (Lars) Abela, Kelli Gibbons, Tommi Gibbons, Melissa (Jim) Mueller, and Brent Leighton, as well as his great-niece and great-nephew, Emma Cherry and Lucas Cherry, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

Jim’s legacy is one of generosity, loyalty, and quiet strength. He will be remembered for his steady presence, his willingness to help without hesitation, and the deep love he had for his family. Though he will be deeply missed, the impact he made and the love he gave will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
