DEGRAAF, Donald E. “Don” of Flint, age 99, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at his residence in the Woodhaven Senior Community Senior Living Retirement Community.
Memorial services will be held 11am Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 2111 Flushing Road, Flint.
Visitation will be held at 9am on Saturday until the time of service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or Bethany Christian Services.
Don was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on June 17,1926 and was the first-born son of Benjamin and Mary DeGraaf. He married Malois “Mae” Wieland on August 20, 1948. Don graduated from Calvin College in 1948 and from the University of Michigan with a Ph. D. in Physics in 1957. He served in the US Navy during both World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of several professional societies concerned with physics education, science and the relationship of science to Christian faith. He was a faithful member of Calvary United Methodist Church, serving the Lord in teaching, advancing world missions and other ways. As one of the founding faculty of the University of Michigan-Flint, Don taught physics there from 1957-1990. He found great satisfaction in developing and practicing improved methods of physics education. After retirement, he found many ways to serve international students from many countries.
Surviving are children, Daniel and wife Vicki DeGraaf, Gwen DeGraaf, David and wife Karen DeGraaf;
grandchildren, Nathan (Heidi), Kathryn (Micah), Meghan, Talitha, Christopher, and Philip
and four great-grandchildren.
many nieces, nephews and a host of close friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Malois “Mae” Wieland DeGraaf on March 3, 2024, parents and brothers, Richard, Dave and Norm.
