Donald was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 16, 1932, to Charles and Clara (Cheslenski) Morgan. Don grew up on the east side of Flint on Missouri Ave. and graduated in 1951 from St. Mary’s Catholic High School. Upon graduation, Don worked at Local 651 AC Spark Plug until enlisting with the Army in April, 1952. Upon finishing Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Quartermaster school in Virginia, Don was sent to the Philippines. In February 1954, Don was a member of the army base football team as a tight end and was selected to play on the All-Star Service Team football game in the Philippines. Don was then assigned to the 8081st Air Delivery and Supply unit with the Air Force at the Da Nang Air base in Tourane, Vietnam. He had been instructing Vietnam troops in parachute rigging when he was captured by the Viet Minh troops in June 1954. He was held along with 200 other French servicemen as a Prisoner of War (POW) at a POW camp 60 miles south of Tourane, Vietnam until August 31st, 1954, when he was released to the French as part of a prisoner exchange. Don’s POW experience and artifacts are on display at the Michigan's Military and Space Heroes Museum located in Frankenmuth, Michigan.
Donald’s brother, TSgt. Robert C. Morgan, based with the US Air Force in Dobodura, New Guinea, was missing in action (MIA) during World War II until the US military recovered his remains in 2007 during an excavation of a B-24D Liberator crash site in Papua New Guinea. Group burial was completed on August 26, 2008, at Arlington National Cemetery. Robert was buried at Great Lakes National Cemetery on April 23, 2008. Don was 10 years old when he last saw his brother and will be buried next to him at Great Lakes National Cemetery.
He married Patricia McCabe on July 7, 1956, and continued to work at AC Spark Plug for 42 additional years until his retirement in 1998. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle on the weekends, played hockey until age 72, enjoyed throwing the ball with his dogs, and attending various sporting events and activities with his four children. Taking the family to Frankenmuth for dinner was always a special treat for birthdays and special occasions.
Donald is survived by his wife, Patricia Morgan; his four children Sharon Stanfield (Fenton, MI), Steven Morgan (Atlanta, GA), Michael (Michele) Morgan (Plano, TX) and David (Angela) Morgan (Williamston, MI); grandchildren Malorie Stanfield (Fenton, MI); Kendra Stanfield, Garrett Stanfield (St. Charles, MI); Megan (David) Taylor (McKinney, TX), Micayla (Ketih) Yazici (Plano, TX); Martin (Kyee) Morgan (Dallas, TX); Jessica, Dawson, Ashley and Jacob Morgan (Williamston, MI); in addition to 3 great grandchildren. |
