John Shaw, 83, of Davison, Michigan passed away on April 24th, 2026, after a difficult battle with dementia.
John was born on July 13th, 1942, to Silas and Georgia (Zimmerman) Shaw in Flint, MI. As a student at Central High School, he discovered his aptitude for running. He was the half mile champ in 1961, breaking a state record. He went on to run for Michigan State University (go green!) for their Track and Field program while earning a degree in Architecture.
After graduation, John married Suzanne (Laurent) and designed and built their home in Davison, Michigan. They had two daughters, Sarah and Lisa. He continued his daily running practice as a hobbyist but also a competitor, which took him to races all across the country. He participated in countless USATF Masters Competitions, ran the Crim every year he was able, and even became a coach. He led both Cross Country and Track & Field teams at Goodrich High School to state championships.
John was also a passionate craftsman who could be found in his makeshift workshop (see also: basement), standing in inches of sawdust working on all kinds of woodworking projects. He could (and often did) recite building codes and historic preservation standards at the drop of a hat, provided longwinded explanations on the merits of different types of wood, and planned multiple family road trips that just happened to include pit stops at Fallingwater. He was a huge history buff, read the newspaper first thing every morning, and would never pass up ice cream cones for dessert.
Anyone who knew John knew that he was an incredible father and spouse. Surviving are children, Sarah (Brent) Shaw-Dressler of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Lisa Shaw of Detroit; grandchildren Luke and Ben Dressler. He was preceded in death by his parents.
No memorial service is planned.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Michigan State University Track & Field Program.
