Shirley "Nan" Pauley, of Lapeer, formerly of Romulus, Michigan, passed away at the age of 88 and went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. She was born on September 17, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, to Waldemar and Evelyn (Peters) Rutkowske, Shirley lived a life that was a testament to the enduring power of faith, family, and friendship.
Described by those who knew her as loving, faith-filled, and funny, Shirley's infectious humor and unwavering positivity touched countless lives. Her special bond with her son Leo was a source of strength and comfort, a bond that exemplified the depth of her love and commitment to her family.
Family was the heart of Shirley's world. She is survived by her loving son, Leo (Cindy) Pauley, and her adored grandchildren, Kari Allen (George), James (Liza) Allen, Leo (Emily) Pauley, Joseph Pauley (Mackenzie), Stephanie Zaccardelli, and Brian Lowe. Shirley's legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Evan, Grace, Thomas, Leo, Evelyn, Elayna, Liam, Jay, and Lucas, who will carry her spirit forward. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Denise Ann "Molly B," and her siblings Wally, Arlene, and Charlie.
Shirley's Christian faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was a devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lapeer. Her commitment to her beliefs was evident in her everyday actions and the love she spread within her community.
A proud graduate of Detroit Lutheran High School in 1955, Shirley's academic achievements laid the foundation for a successful career. She dedicated over 35 years of service as an executive assistant at Hudson's in both Oakland Mall and Downtown Detroit. It was there that she met Sandy Ngiala, forging a lifelong friendship that would bring joy and companionship throughout the years.
Shirley's love for sports was unparalleled, with a particular passion for the Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings. Her enthusiasm extended to the lanes, where she once shared memorable moments on a bowling league with her daughter Denise. On days when sports weren't on the television, Shirley could be found engrossed in the Game Show Network, her mind always sharp and ready for a challenge.
Bingo nights at the Senior Center were a thrice-weekly highlight for Shirley, where her presence was as anticipated as the games themselves. At home, she found solace and joy in watching the birds at her feeder, a simple pleasure that connected her to the beauty of nature and the pulse of her neighborhood. Shirley's keen observations often turned into stories that entertained and connected her to those she loved.
Shirley "Nan" Pauley's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with the threads of dedication, joy, and an unshakable spirit. Her memory will be treasured by all who were fortunate enough to know her, and her stories, laughter, and love will echo through generations. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we celebrate the legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of love, laughter, and the enduring power of family and friendship. Forever Remembered, Forever Missed.
