BARTKIW, John - Of Flint, age 91, passed away Monday, December 28, 2015 at his home.
Funeral Divine Liturgy/Office of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am Saturday, January 2, 2016 at St. Michael Byzantine Church, 2333 North Elms Road, Flushing,
The Very Reverend David A. Hannes officiating.
Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
Those desiring may make contributions to St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church.
Visitation 3-8pm Friday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. A Parastas (Memorial Service) will be held 6:30pm Friday evening at the funeral home. Visitation 9:30am Saturday at the church until the time of the Liturgy.
John was born in Monastyr Lisnyanskiy Ukraine (near Drohobych) on September 9, 1924. At the age of 17, he was taken from his family and homeland as forced labor to Germany during the second World War. He survived this hardship and went to live and work in Belgium in the coal mines. In 1954, he immigrated with his wife and two children to the United States. He eventually became a naturalized citizen of the United States. He was very proud of this and grateful for his newly adopted homeland. He retired from E-P-O Flint Manufacturing (“Chevy in the Hole”) in 1985 after 30.2 years of service. John was a long standing parishioner of St. Michael Byzantine Church. He married Maria Misik on November 22, 1944. He was a member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, the Ukrainian Hall and UAW Local 659. Mr. Bartkiw was employed by General Motors Chevrolet Manufacturing Plant 4 for 30 years, retiring in 1985.
Surviving are wife, Maria;
2 children; Dr. Nykola (Pearl) Bartkiw, and Ms. Marie Miller;
5 grandchildren; Olena (Dan) Mandeville, Dr. Mykola Bartkiw, Lesia (Chris) Campbell, Lara (Larry) Weatherford and Tamara Kochie;
6 great-grandchildren; Natasha and Tyler Oliver, Anna Miller, Hunter Brock, Gabriel and Natalia Hay;
1 great-great-grandson, Vincent Craddock.
