Marcia Louise Bird, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, social worker, community advocate, and friend, was born May 20, 1954, to Forest Marshall Campbell and Doris Campbell-Coy.
Marcia spent her early childhood in Ferndale, Michigan, near 8½ Mile and Woodward, where she lived through her middle school years. Her family later moved to the Brighton and
South Lyon area, where she spent her high school years and much of her early adulthood. She graduated from Brighton High School and maintained a lifelong connection to the area and her classmates through the Brighton High School Alumni Association.
Education and service were important throughout Marcia’s life. She earned her bachelor’s degree from John Wesley College in Owosso and went on to earn a master’s degree in Social Work Administration and Clinical Practice from the University of Michigan.
Marcia dedicated her professional life to helping others, particularly children, families, and individuals who needed someone willing to listen, advocate, and stand beside them. During her career, she worked as an outpatient therapist and as a social worker with the Michigan State University Bleeding & Clotting Clinic. Her leadership roles included serving as Director of the Child Advocacy Center in Owosso, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clinton County, The Arc Livingston, and Visions Incorporated.
Her commitment to others extended far beyond her professional career. Marcia served as Director of Special Olympics Michigan Area 27 in Livingston County and as an advisor to the Shiawassee Youth Advisory Council. She also served as a committee chair with the Shiawassee County Democratic Party. She gave her time generously to local food distributions, warming centers, homeless meal preparation, and other efforts intended to make life a little better for those around her.
Marcia was a non-denominational Christian who had been raised in the Lutheran Church. Her faith and her deeply held belief in caring for others were reflected not simply in words, but in the way she lived.
For 51 years, Marcia shared her life with her husband, David Paul Bird. Together they built a family that became the center of her world. She was the loving mother of Chris Bird and his wife, Karreen; Jon Bird and his wife, Sarah; and Monica Mueller and her husband, Justin. She was a treasured grandmother to Isabel, Elias, Willa, Morgan, and Jason. She also shared a special bond with her sister, Sally Pregitzer and her husband, Bob, and her beloved dog, Luna.
Of all the titles Marcia held throughout her life, those connected to her family were among the ones she cherished most.
Marcia showed her love by showing up. Whether it was a soccer game, a robotics competition, a family gathering, or an ordinary afternoon together, she made certain the people she loved knew they mattered. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel seen, included, safe, and connected.
Some of the family's most treasured memories were created during camping trips to Sleepy Hollow and Pentwater and during time spent together at Briggs Lake and Silver Lake in South Lyon. There were trips to the park with her children and grandchildren and countless cherished DeVries memories. Family vacations took them to New Orleans, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, and other destinations, but Marcia understood that the most meaningful moments were often found simply in being together.
With her grandchildren, Marcia found joy in crafting and sewing, playing board games, filling out Mad Libs, reading, and exploring the outdoors. She gave them the precious gift of her time and attention, creating memories they will carry throughout their lives.
Marcia had a way of putting others before herself. She created a safe place for people and had an uncommon ability to bring people together. She listened. She encouraged. She advocated. She spoke up for people who needed a voice and approached others with empathy and compassion.
In recent weeks, many people have shared stories about the difference Marcia made in their lives. Their words paint a portrait of a woman whose influence reached well beyond her immediate family.
She has been remembered as a “constant light,” an “amazing woman,” and “such a positive influence.” One person wrote simply, “She was who we all should strive to be.”
Another shared, “Your mom had a huge impact on and helped a lot of people. But most of all she loves her children and grandchildren with all her heart — the greatest gift she gives.”
Perhaps one tribute captured the breadth of Marcia’s impact especially well: “A giant in our community has left us. Marcia Bird moved through our lives with love, respect, wisdom and bravery. Thank you for your influence on our lives. We are better for it.”
To her family, however, Marcia was more than a community leader, advocate, therapist, volunteer, or mentor. She was the person who helped hold everyone together.
As another tribute beautifully expressed, “She was the glue that held our family together. She lived with her heart on her sleeve by speaking up for others, speaking out against injustice, and always leading with empathy. She was a beautiful soul.”
Marcia leaves behind a legacy measured not simply by the organizations she led or the positions she held, but by people — the children and families she advocated for, the individuals she counseled, the young people she encouraged, the community members she served, the friends she supported, and, most importantly, the family she loved with all her heart.
In keeping with Marcia’s lifelong commitment to helping others, the Shiawassee Community Foundation is establishing the Marcia L. Bird Memorial Fund, which will support youth-oriented grants and opportunities for area young people to become involved in service.
Memorial contributions may also be directed to the Shiawassee County Democratic Party for office rental expenses or to the Michigan Education Savings Program (MESP) for Marcia’s grandchildren.
Marcia’s life demonstrated the extraordinary difference one person can make by consistently choosing to care, to serve, to include, and to show up. Her influence will continue through her family, through the community she served, and through the countless people who are better for having known her.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Marcia will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, September 27, 2026 at DeVries Nature Conservancy, 2635 N. M-52. Owosso. The Bird family will receive friends at DeVries beginning at 12:00pm. |
