Dr. Lewis was born in Wilson, North Carolina, on August 11, 1946, son of the late Henry and Annie (Taylor) Lewis. John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1967, including a tour in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966. Following his honorable service, he married the love of his life, Becky Strange, on March 16, 1967, a partnership that would span decades of ministry, travel, and shared devotion to the Lord. In 1974, John experienced the most transformative moment of his life when he was born again on February 11. From that day forward, he pursued a life wholly dedicated to Jesus Christ, whom he loved with all his heart. John’s calling to ministry led him to serve as Pastor of Harvest Baptist Church on the island of Guam from 1979 to 1998, where he also founded Harvest Baptist Bible College, training generations of men and women for gospel service. From 1998 to 2014, he continued his pastoral ministry at Faith Baptist Church in Davison, MI, faithfully shepherding his congregation with wisdom, humility, and passion for the Word. A visionary and steadfast leader, John served on the Board of Trustees at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, from 1991 to 2023, including as Chairman from 2016 until 2023. His influence and integrity left a lasting legacy in Christian education and leadership. John's spirit of adventure took him to 78 countries, where he marveled at God's creation and shared his faith with many. Never one to shy away from a challenge, he proudly walked two half-marathons—one in California and another in North Carolina—demonstrating both perseverance and joy in life’s journey. In his later years, one of John’s greatest joys was vacationing on the Outer Banks with his family every summer. John’s legacy is one of unwavering faith, tireless service, and deep love—for his Savior, his family, and all those he encountered. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered by those whose lives he touched so deeply.

Dr. Lewis is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rebecca “Becky” Lewis; 2 children, Erik (DeAnna) Lewis and Erin (Gerry) Yezbick; 7 grandchildren, Shawn (Hannah) Lewis, Heather Lewis, Hailey Lewis, Jesse Yezbick, Nicholas Yezbick, Sadie Yezbick and Beatrice Yezbick; 3 great-grandchildren, James Erik Lewis and Zachary Robert Lewis and coming soon, Samuel John Lewis; 4 siblings, Jimmie Lewis, Nancy Pridgen, Gene Lewis, and Ray (Ida) Lewis; brother-in-law, Mike Michaletz; many other loving family members and friends.
