BALDWIN, Shirly Jean (Wheeler) – of Davison, age 81, passed away September 30, 2015 at Genesys Health Park while being surrounded and sung to by her family. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held 2PM Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison; Pastor Conrad Bontrager officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8PM and Saturday from 1-2PM. Flowers are welcome, as are donations in her name to charities benefiting children or public gardens. You may also choose to plant flowers in her honor.
Shirly was born in Coral, MI on November 14, 1933, daughter of the late Gilbert and Leona (Medes) Wheeler. She lived much of her life in Davison. Shirly graduated as valedictorian of Davison High School in 1952, an accomplishment she remained proud of her entire life. After high school, she worked as a highly valued legal secretary. Shirly married Eugene S. Baldwin in 1956.
The joy of Shirly's life was her family. She had five children, ten grandchildren and recently enjoyed a summer visit from her three great-grandchildren. Her love for her family extended to everyone they loved-friends became part of her family. Her favorite times were when the entire family was together at the old farmhouse, talking, laughing, playing the piano, with plenty of little kids running around.
Shirly was a loyal friend. Though she was preceded in death by some of her best ones, she kept them alive in her heart for the rest of her life. She and her husband regularly had lunch with their classmates from high school.
Shirly was curious, intelligent and creative. She loved gardening, the natural world, travel, sewing and the arts. Shirly's garden was a masterpiece of care, color and beauty. She never saw a bird without trying to figure out what kind it was and was always on the watch for animal sightings on the road. She enjoyed exploring new places across the country, especially if they had a zoo. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing wedding dresses, clothing and innumerable Halloween costumes for her family with precision and style. She loved to sing, play the piano and accordion, listen to a wide variety of music, go to the theater and watch films.
Shirly is survived by her husband, Eugene S. Baldwin; children, Kimberly Donahue, Teresa (Gregory) Blaine, Eric (Wendy) Baldwin, Lois (Fred) Jeffers, Robin (Darlene) Baldwin, Dave Labick; grandchildren, Maria (Amanda) Hawthorne, Megan (Robert) Donahue, Andrew Donahue, Landon Baldwin, Collin Baldwin, Christian Baldwin, Ethan Baldwin, Rick Jeffers, Dan Jeffers, Anthony Smith; great-grandchildren, Brisa, Coral and Ryker; brother, Dale (Diane) Wheeler; brother-in-law, Lyle Baldwin; numerous much loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her first born grandchild, Baby Boy Engel; her parents; her husbands parents, Stephen and Helen Baldwin; nephew, Anthony Wheeler; son-in-law, Richard Donahue; sister-in-law, Bonnie Baldwin; many dear friends and relatives.
