Douglas Raymond Ryland, age 92, of Whittemore, MI formerly of Flint, MI, passed away on January 12, 2021 at The Villa of West Branch, MI. He was born on August 7, 1928 in Whittemore, MI to John and Emily (Perkins) Ryland who were farmers. He was the fifth of seven children. They moved to another farm near Hale, MI where Doug attended the Nestor School. His first job was working for National Gypsum and then he was called into the US Army during WWII from 1946-1949. Upon completion of his service he married his first wife Lillian Fernandez on January 20, 1949 in Honolulu, HI. They moved to Flint, MI in 1954 where he worked for GM Fisher Body Division Truck & Bus for 33 years as a general foreman. Upon his retirement in 1987 they spent winters in Florida and summers in Michigan. After 62 years of marriage Lillian passed away on January 24, 2011. He then reconnected with his first love, Dorothy Putnam Lehman. He and Dorothy were married on November 12, 2011 in Whittemore.
Doug liked to play cards, travel, snowmobile, go to rummage sales, play pool, do crossword puzzles, repair things, go deer hunting, fishing and watch TV Westerns. But his greatest thrill in life was to be working. Even in retirement in Florida he worked as a maintenance man in the park where he lived. He belonged to the American Legion and at one time to the Moose Lodge. He was described as a hard worker, caring, having a good sense of humor and always willing to help a friend in need.

Doug is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lehman-Ryland of Whittemore, MI; children: Dorene Dingel of Flint, MI, Warren Pemberton of Zephyrhills, FL, Kay (Robert) Mitchell of Prescott, MI. David Lehman of Clio, MI, Mark (Jennifer) Lehman of Midland, MI, Matthew (Kathy) Lehman of Concord, MI; numerousgrandchildren; great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Emily Ryland; first wife Lillian; siblings, James, Fred, George, John, Emily & Velma; and sons, Rick Lehman and Anthony Fernandez.

Visitation took place on Saturday, January 16, 2021 from noon to 2:00 pm at the Twining Chapel of the Buresh Funeral Home. Services took place at 2:00 pm at the funeral home with Pastor Gary L. Gillings of the Whittemore United Methodist Church officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
