Burial will be at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly MI at 1:30 pm on Thursday, February 19.

Rosemary was born September 16, 1941, in Owosso, the daughter of Nelson and Katherine (Getling) Martenis.

She graduated from Owosso High School, class of 1959. She then took some nursing classes at Hurley Hospital before working at Owosso Memorial Hospital.

She married her forever best friend Richard Gillett, in Manassas, Virginia on July 30, 1962. They lived in the Owosso/Corunna area and enjoyed spending winters in Haines City, Florida during their retirement years, where they met best friends, the Burry’s. She was afflicted with Alzheimer’s and battled courageously for many years, finally being cared for by the wonderful staff at The Meadows of Owosso’s Memory Care Unit during her final three years.

Rose loved her family, and especially cooking for them, never letting anyone leave hungry. She was so proud to show her grandkids how to make desserts and enjoyed submitting food entries into the Shiawassee County Fair. She enjoyed sharing time with family and friends at reunions, birthdays, anniversaries and celebrations. Rose cherished her time with her sister Dixie, including activities of bingo, card nights, casino trips and a special cruise. She held a special place in her heart for her neighbors on Hibbard Rd, considering them her extended family. She loved attending sporting and award ceremonies for her children and grandchildren, excitedly cheering from the stands no matter the event. She spent much of her life as a stay-at-home mom and took pride in providing for her family with the produce from their huge garden, freezing and canning vegetables, especially her dill pickles. A tireless worker, she set the example along with her husband that “Nothing was given to you…you’ve earned everything you got”.

Rose turned her love of cooking into a career later in life by becoming a cook for the Middle School and later Head Cook at Louise Peacock School in Corunna. She took her job very seriously and toiled over the menu balancing nutrition with foods the children liked to eat. She retired from the Corunna Schools and started enjoying retirement at Leisure Lake and then becoming a Haines City, Florida snowbird for 17 years.

Rose is survived by sons Richard Jr. (Vonda) Gillett, Michael (Renee’ Vandemark) Gillett and Daniel (Shannon) Gillett; eight grandchildren, Matthew (Andrea) Gillett, Angela (Brandon) Eckerle, Brendan Misner-Gillett, MacKenzie DeWitt, Allyson Gillett, Duncan Gillett, Collin (Maddie Krantz) Gillett, and Sydnie Gillett. She was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren; Aleigha Eckerle, Braylon Eckerle, Owen Gillett, Benjamin Gillett, Madelyn Gillett, Kade DeWitt, Suttyn DeWitt; beloved sister Dixie Sierkowski; numerous dear Michigan and Florida friends, longtime neighbors, Church members at Redeemer Lutheran Church and Owosso First Church of The Nazarene.

She was predeceased by her husband Richard; parents Nelson and Katherine Martenis; brothers Albert and Clifford Martenis; sisters Nina Nickles and Ruth Fox.

Memorial contributions are suggested to The Meadows of Owosso - Activities Fund.
