Valerie Dawn Cooper, known lovingly as Val, passed away on September 10, 2026, in Royal Oak, Michigan, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on June 6, 1956, in Flint Michigan, and lived a life marked by kindness, devotion, and a deep love for the people and places that shaped her.
Val was a loving, passionate, and thoughtful woman whose presence brought warmth and comfort to those around her. She carried herself with quiet strength and a generous spirit, and she was known for the care she showed on both ordinary moments and the most important seasons of life. Her family was the center of her world, and she found great joy in being a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
She is survived by her husband, David Cooper; her son, Sam Cooper and his wife Katie; her daughter, Jacalyn Hopkins and her husband Josh; her grandchildren, Alex Hopkins, Elara Hopkins, Wesley Cooper, and Averie Cooper; and her sister, Vickie Moore. Val treasured her family deeply and took great pride in the lives and accomplishments of those she loved. She was happiest when surrounded by the people who meant the most to her, and she created a home filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories.
Val attended Flint Northwestern and carried the values of hard work and perseverance throughout her life. She retired from Home Depot after years of dedicated service, where she was appreciated for her reliability, her strong work ethic, and her friendly nature. Her commitment to helping others extended well beyond her career. She volunteered at Habitat for humanity and the Saginaw soup kitchen, giving her time and energy to support those in need. She also helped set up Adopt a Highway for Home Depot in Saginaw, reflecting her belief in contributing to her community in meaningful and practical ways.
Outside of work and service, Val found joy in the simple and beautiful things in life. She enjoyed rock hunting along Lake Superior, a pastime that reflected her appreciation for nature and discovery. She loved spending time with her family, cooking meals that brought everyone together, shopping, and camping with the kids. These moments were among her most cherished, and they became part of the many memories her family will hold close forever.
Val's life was one of devotion, compassion, and steady love. She was the kind of person who made others feel welcome, cared for, and understood. Her thoughtful nature and generous heart touched many lives, and her legacy will live on through the family she loved so deeply and the many people who were fortunate enough to know her.
Though her passing leaves a profound emptiness, her memory will continue to bring comfort and inspiration to those who mourn her. Val will be remembered for her strength, her warmth, and the enduring love she gave so freely. Her life was a gift to her family and to all who knew her, and her spirit will remain a lasting presence in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
