Donald Szabo of Au Gres, Michigan, formerly of Flint, Michigan and Corunna Michigan, passed away Monday, August 3rd, 2020 with family by his side at McLaren Bay Region Hospital in Bay City, Michigan. He was 83 years old. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Lucille Springer Szabo, in January of this year.

Born on March 30th, 1937 in Flint, Michigan, Donald attended Flint Central High School before enlisting in the US Air Force where he achieved the rank of Staff Sargent. After leaving the Air Force in 1959, Donald began a long career with General Motors, retiring in 1993 from the Parts and Service Division in Swartz Creek, Michigan. Donald married Lucille Belle Springer in 1963 and together they raised two children and opened their home to many foster children over twenty-five plus years. Donald was an avid participant in many sports, participating in work and city league softball and hockey teams as well as playing competitive tennis and golf. He harbored a life long love for sailing and spent many of his later years as a hobby boat builder, donating many of his boats to the church for various fundraisers. His later years were also devoted to the Knights of Columbus where he served for a time as the Grand Knight of the Au Gres chapter.

Donald is survived by his daughter, Susan Dwight; his son, Scott Szabo; two grandsons, Nathan Dwight and Ryan Dwight; and two younger brothers, Richard Szabo and Joseph Szabo as well as several nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Florence Szabo and his wife, Lucille Springer Szabo.

Funeral services will be held beginning at 6:30 pm Friday, August, 7th, 2020 at St. Mark Catholic Church, 415 South Court Street, Au Gres, Michigan. Funeral Mass will begin at 7:00pm with Fr. Thomas Kowalczyk officiating. He will be laid to rest in Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan on Tuesday, August 11th, 2020. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to, St. Mark's Building Fund, the Au Gres chapter of the Knights of Columbus or a mass card in memory of Donald or a loved one.
