IKELER Dorothy Elizabeth -- Age 85, of Grand Blanc, died peacefully early Thursday morning, November 9, 2017. She was born on January 12, 1932 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She was the only daughter of Robert Downey and Pauline (Decker) Downey. She had an older brother Basil (Hughie) Downey. She was the foster daughter of Herbert and Annie Hooven, of Kalamazoo, Michigan. She had a sister Janice (Baxter). She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and attended Parsons Business School.
Dorothy was married to Donald Andrew Ikeler Jr., on September 23, 1950 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. They had 6 sons: Donald (Andy), Dan, Denis, David, Derek and Doug. They moved to Flint, MI (1952), Lake Fenton (1967), Danville, CA (1969) and back to Lake Fenton(1971).
She worked for Lake Fenton Community School District (1972-1990), starting as a playground assistant and retired after 18 years serving in the positions of Secretary for the Superintendent of the Board of Education, the Administrative Assistant for the School Board, and Editor of Lake Fenton Breeze School Newspaper.
Dorothy and Don were married for 40 years until his death in 1990. She then retired from Lake Fenton Schools in 1992 and moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1993. She married Homer Logan Lane on June 17, 1995, in Phoenix. While living there, she was a member of the Crittenton Women’s Auxiliary Club, the Rolls Royce Club, the Arizona Country Club, Phoenix Moon Valley Country Club and the Michigan Association of Retired Personnel.
Dorothy and Homer bought a second home in Grand Blanc, MI in 2001. After Homer’s death in 2008, Dorothy moved permanently to Grand Blanc, MI, in 2010.
Dorothy enjoyed many activities including: living on the water, boating, traveling, shopping, decorating, entertaining, and cooking. She is remembered by her children and grandchildren for her “Delicious, Dorothy, Deadly Dinners”. She also enjoyed playing Bridge with her many friends both old and new in Michigan and Arizona. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents (Robert and Pauline Downey); her foster parents (Herbert and Annie Hooven), brother Hughey Downey, and 2 husbands Don Ikeler and Homer Lane. Dorothy will be greatly missed by her sons: Andy (Rene’) of Reno, Nevada; Dan (Susan), of Grand Haven, Township, MI; Denis (Shirley,) of Grand Blanc, MI; David (Carla), of Sterling Heights, MI; Derek (Joanie), of Brandon Township, MI; and Doug, of Fenton, MI. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Janice (Richard) Baxter, of Delton, MI.
She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren: Marci (Aaron) Rutledge, Stephen (MaryJo) Stewart, Darren Ikeler, David (Jessica) Ikeler, DJ (Kelsey Ikeler), Erin Ikeler, Olivia Ikeler, Jarrod Stewart, Ryan (Amy) Ikeler, Jason Ikeler, Desiree’ (Chris) Wilson, and Jenny (Josh) Herweyer; 3 nephews, Tom, David and Steve Elzinga. Several great nieces and nephews and many dear friends. She is also great-grandmother of Kaylee, Kyle, Dakota, Dustin, Stephen, Noah, Francis, Weston, and Levi, and one great-grandchild due March 2018. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton, followed immediately by a 1PM memorial service. DJ Ikeler officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Center for Success Network (an after school mentoring program for at risk children), 1600 Grand Blvd, Detroit, MI 48211.
