Movina (Mathews) Dorris of Burton, age 94, passed away peacefully Monday December 25, 2023 at Hospice House of Shiawassee County. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday December 29, 2023 at the Hansen Funeral Home Groves Chapel, Downtown Davison. Rev. Kim Metzer officiating: with private burial in Davison Cemetery at a later date. Family will receive visitors from 11 – 2 pm Friday at the funeral home. Those desiring may make contributions in Movina’s memory to Hospice House of Shiawassee County or Open Door United Methodist Church.
Movina was born in Truman Arkansas on February 28, 1929 the daughter of the late Hughie and Bertha (Hester) Jackson. Her family relocated to Genesee County, Michigan where she later met and married Robert E. Mathews on May 18, 1946, and he preceded her in death on February 17, 1979. Together they raised four sons, and Movina was a dedicated wife, mother, and later grandmother. Upon the loss of husband Robert Movina for the first time found employment at United Way, and was introduced to Carl G. Dorris whom she would later marry on September 25, 1981 and he preceded her in death on July 5, 2000. Movina was a long time member of Atherton United Methodist Church which is now the Open Door United Methodist Church; Movina blessed those she met with warm and welcoming personality. She was an active member of the Church Women’s Society. She enjoyed the outdoors and spent hours gardening.
She is survived by her son Garry E. Mathews. Gary cared for his mother for several years. Movina was grateful for his doing so with love and compassion. His lighthearted ways added variety and humor to her day. Other family members surviving are daughter-in-law Lauri Mathews, granddaughters: Katrina (Brandon) Weber, Addie Mathews, and Emilie (Rob) Brock, grandsons: Joseph (Kimberly) Mathews, James (Kristen) Mathews, Justin (Brittany) Mathews, and seven great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and a host of extended family and friends. Besides her husband’s Robert and Carl, she is preceded by sons: James D. Mathews on March 25, 1973, Donald R. Mathews on April 25, 2012, and David H. Mathews on December 1, 2014.
