John Salomon, age 94, passed away peacefully in his home on September 24th, 2019 at 3:08pm.
Born on May 6th, 1925, John was the son of Carlos and Manuela Salomon. Growing up in Beit Sahour, Palestine, John was captain of the national soccer team, a dance instructor, teacher, bookkeeper, and was loved and respected by all. At the age of 20, he met the brightest and most beautiful woman in Palestine and won her hand in marriage. John and Widad were blessed to have celebrated seventy-four years of marriage, until Widad's passing on May 19th, 2019. In 1948, John and Widad migrated with their newborn daughter to Tela, Honduras, where John had extensive family. After 10 years in Honduras and $1,500 in his pocket, he moved his wife and 4 children once more, making Michigan their permanent home.
John purchased a grocery store, Johnny's Market, on North Street in Flint and moved his family into the upstairs apartment. He was well-loved by his patrons in the small auto factory community where his store thrived and grew to have quite the reputation about town. Over the years, John was responsible for helping countless families from Honduras and Palestine become US citizens - many of whom became respected business owners and community leaders. John took great pride in his work, and his honesty, integrity, and true sincerity shone through to everyone he encountered.
Outside of work, John loved playing card games, especially with his wife every day. He also was an excellent backgammon player, having competed and won internationally, and loved playing with his children and grandchildren upon their visits, often laughing when he would win once again. After retirement, John worked with his son, Raji, to help build and grow The Great Put On, also in Flint. Known as "Papa" by all who worked there, he found great pleasure and pride in putting his exceptional business sense to use and remaining productive until the very end. John was known to freely give advice to his children, family, friends and complete strangers - always with the most helpful intentions. Additionally, John was a Master Mason, a Consulate of the Republic of Honduras, and founding member of the Heritage Council and Beit Sahour Club.
Most of all, John cherished the time he spent with his wife and family. He had a special relationship with all his grandchildren and great grandchildren, frequently remarking that "as long as his family was happy - he was happy." John and Widad were an inseparable force and loved spending time together, whether it was playing pinochle, sharing meals, eating fruit, or watching evening TV, it was very clear how much they loved each other. John was easy-going and incapable of holding a grudge. He was as frugal as they come, never bought anything at full price, and truly knew the value of a hard-earned dollar. He had a great sense of humor, and his laugh would brighten up any situation - something that we will all dearly miss.
John is survived by his five children - Hiam Andoni (Basil), Carlos Salomon (Denise), Raji Salomon (Sue), Dalal Salomon (Kim), and John Salomon, Jr. (Michele).
Additionally, the family would like to give a special thanks to McLaren Hospice, especially Sara; to his loving caregivers, Delaney and Peyton; and to his niece, Diana.
In lieu of flowers, his family would appreciate donations be made to St. George Orthodox Church (5191 Lennon Road). A visitation is scheduled for Thursday evening at St. George Orthodox Church from 4-8pm with a Trisagion service beginning at 7pm. Funeral services will also be held at St. George on Friday, September 27th, 2019, with visitation beginning at 10am and service at 11am.
