NEHRING, Ralph - beloved husband, father, brother, and papa was called home by his Lord and Savior on February 17, 2026. He was 87 years old.
Ralph was born to parents Beulah and Carl Nehring in Croswell, Michigan on June 11, 1938. His family moved to the Burton area where Ralph attended area schools and graduated from Atherton High School. He later graduated from Western Michigan University with a teaching degree and taught at Bentley High School. Ralph’s first high school job was at Hamady Brothers where he discovered his love for the grocery business. Later his parents bought a little store on Belsay and Bristol Roads and renamed it Nehring’s Market. Ralph managed the store for his parents and left teaching to pursue a full-time career in the grocery business. What started as a side business for his family became a lifelong passion for Ralph. He owned the store for over 40 years and worked there until his mid-80s. Ralph enjoyed talking with his customers and serving his community. He treated everyone that came to Nehring’s like family.
Ralph met the love of his life, Linda Sue Thompson, at his church youth group. They were married on June 9, 1962 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Burton. Ralph and Linda had three daughters and were married 63 years. They enjoyed traveling, playing cards with their card club, and swing dancing. Ralph was proud of his family and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Many wonderful memories were made at their cabin in Presque Isle during the summer and in Englewood FL in the winter.
Most of all, Ralph loved his Lord and Savior. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Ralph was a charter member of Good Shepherd where he served his church faithfully in many ways. He particularly enjoyed projects that would beautify the church and was a strong supporter of Christian education. We rejoice that Ralph is now in heaven with our Savior.
Ralph served his Lord, family and community with love and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Linda; daughters, Liz Cleveland, Kate Nehring, and Sarah (Wisson) Slangor; grandchildren, Matthew Quigley, Allie Quigley, Eli (Ellie) Slangor, Ella Slangor, and Ethan Slangor; brothers, Gary (Rose Ella) Nehring, Carl Nehring; sister, Sharon Sipes and many nieces and nephews.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Beulah Nehring; parents-in-law, Cale and Sada Thompson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kenny and Betty Cockerill; brothers-in-law, David Sipes and Bill Thompson, and nephew Gary Nehring, Jr.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2026 from 3-7 PM at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 W. Hill Road, Flint.
Visitation will also be held on Monday, February 23 from 10-11 AM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 5496 Lippincott Blvd., Burton. The funeral service will begin at 11 AM with Pastor John Meyer officiating. Interment to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Blanc. The family requests memorial donations can be made in lieu of flowers to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Jesus said in the book of John chapter 11 verse 25, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.” While we mourn Ralph’s death, we rejoice in the victory he has in the resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ! To God be the glory!
