Irene Lydia Leonard, 96, a Lifelong member of the Lapeer Community, passed away on June 1, 2026. Irene was born in Leonard on February 11, 1930, to parents Isaac and Myrtle (Powers) Barrett. She married the love of her life Gerald Leonard on February 20, 1952 at the First Presbyterian Church in Lapeer.
Irene graduated from Lapeer High School class of 1948. Irene was a devout Christian as a member of First Presbyterian in Lapeer for over 70 years. She was very passionate about genealogy and would spend a lot of her time at the Lapeer Historical Society. In the spring and summer, Irene would spend countless hours tending to her amazing flower and vegetable garden. As a competitor, she was always ready to play games with friends and family. Irene loved cooking, especially for her family or just about anyone that was hungry; she knew that the time spent sharing a meal was so much more than food and that those seemingly trivial moments, were where a family’s love truly grew.
Irene is survived by her son: Richard (Ann) Leonard of North Branch; grandchildren: Jeremy (Tracy Warner) Leonard, Julie (Dan) Wilcox, Krista (Randy) Balcer, Kendra (Dennis) Boychuk, Aaron Leonard and Autumn (Mat) Leonard; great-grandchildren: Logan, Maya, Jerry, Wyatt, Isaac, Kina, Zoey, Tristin, Emma, Caden and Grayson; and her sister-in-law Shirley Moore. She was preceded in death 13 years ago to the day by her loving husband Gerald Leonard; her son Robert Leonard; grandson Theron Leonard; her siblings and her aforementioned parents.
Visitation for Irene will be held on Wednesday June 3, 2026 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer from 4:00-8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 2:00 PM; the family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The First Presbyterian Church in Lapeer or the Lapeer Historical Society.
