Philip John Zimmerman, age 67, of Byron, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 31, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
A Funeral Mass in celebration of Philip's life will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 11, 2026, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, located at 6481 Faussett Rd, Howell, Michigan, 48855, with Inurnment immediately following Mass at St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on the same day; the family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until the time of the service.
Philip was born on June 2, 1959, in Flint, Michigan, to Donald and Shirley Zimmerman. He graduated from Powers Catholic High School in Flint in 1977, where his love of sports, particularly baseball, began to take shape. He went on to play baseball at Ferris State University. Philip spent much of his working life in the automotive and food industries. He worked at General Motors in a variety of roles, including as a paint scientist, on the assembly line, and operating forklifts. He later attended Wayne State University, where he earned his USDA certification in meat cutting. He went on to work with numerous grocery stores and meat suppliers throughout the area, from Lake Orion to Fowlerville.
While Philip worked hard throughout his life, it was the people around him and the things he loved that mattered most. He had a lifelong love of sports and generously gave his time coaching baseball, football, wrestling, and soccer in both Byron and travel baseball. He loved working with kids, and that feeling was certainly mutual. The children he coached knew him as someone who cared about them, encouraged them, and wanted to see them succeed.
Philip enjoyed playing and watching baseball, playing in the Flint City B League for 23 years, golfing, and bowling. He bowled for many years in leagues throughout the Flint area, including the Men's Classic league. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman, making many trips to Minnesota to enjoy both. He especially enjoyed ice fishing and never seemed to mind the cold. In fact, it was during a skiing trip in their early twenties that Philip met the woman who would become his wife in January 1984.
Philip married Deann Lea on October 14, 1989, in Lake Orion, Michigan. Together they shared 36 years of marriage and raised three sons. Philip was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family deeply. He was proud of his children and grandchildren and cherished the time he spent with them.
Philip was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Howell and was active with the UAW. He was a hard worker, goal-oriented, determined, and tough, but those who knew him best also knew his caring and generous nature. Above all, Philip loved his family, loved children, and loved the Lord.
Philip is survived by his beloved wife, Deann Lea Zimmerman; sons, Miles (Amber) Zimmerman, Zachary Zimmerman, and Luke Zimmerman; grandchildren, Allyson Zimmerman and Robert Zimmerman; sister, Kathleen (Leonard) Kerperien; brothers, Kenneth (Mae) Zimmerman, Edward (Jean) Zimmerman, and Anthony (Dawn) Zimmerman; along with many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald (Juanita) Zimmerman and Shirley (Donald) Pucilowski.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Philip's name to St. Augustine Catholic Church or the American Cancer Society.
