Died: 11/29/2017
Age: 90
Community: formerly of Flushing, MI

Jaclyn (Jackie) Kieley Hoffman, 90, formerly of Flushing, Michigan, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2017, at Independence Village in Midland. She was born on October 19, 1927, in Mount Vernon, New York, to the late John Joseph Kieley and Matilda (Umstatter) Kieley. On October 7, 1950, she married Charles (Chuck) Powell Hoffman in Montclair, New Jersey. Their deep, enduring love resulted in a marriage lasting 67 years.
Jackie was raised in Pelham, New York, and graduated from Pelham Memorial High School in 1945. She then attended Alfred University, a small liberal arts college in upstate New York. Graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, she completed graduate-level courses at Columbia University. She began her nursing career in 1949 as an OB-GYN nurse at St. John’s Hospital in New York. After she and Chuck married, they moved to New Jersey and started their family. Jackie continued working part-time and attending to her growing family.
In 1961, in connection with Chuck’s career with Buick, the family moved to Michigan where they bought a 62-acre farm in Flushing Township. Jackie returned to full-time employment at Hurley Hospital in Flint, but always put her family first. Although country living had not been her first choice, she grew to love life on the farm, convinced that it offered the right environment in which to raise their three children.
In 1963, she began teaching OB-GYN classes in the diploma program at the Hurley School of Nursing, and in 1968 began her employment at Mott (Community) College. Starting in the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program, she eventually moved into the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program. Once her children were all off to college, Jackie returned to graduate work, completing a Master’s of Arts in Nursing Education at the University of Detroit-Mercy while continuing her career at Mott. She retired in December 1989 as the ADN Coordinator, so that she and Chuck could winter together in McNeal, Arizona; they did so for 17 years.
Jackie is survived by her husband, Chuck; daughter Gail L. Hoffman (Thomas H. Lane); son Charles (Chip) P. Hoffman Jr. (Marcia L. Reed); daughter Lisa J. Hoffman; grandson Christopher R. Johnson; grandson Adam P. Johnson; granddaughter Alexandra L. (Nick) Gamber; nephew John J. Kieley III; nieces Lynn L. Kimmel and Nan E. Desrosiers ; sister-in-law Lieselotte Hoffman; and nieces Janeal (Fred) Scott and Arlene (Adam) Wayte. Jackie was predeceased by her brother Harold G. Kieley and her sister Marjory C. Desrosiers. Unquestionably matriarch of the family, she raised her children to work hard, weather the difficult times, and always embrace the values she had worked so hard to instill.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mid-Michigan Medical Center-Midland, Stratford Pines, Independence Village, and Laurus Home Care for their professionalism, expertise, and, above all,
