Philip was born on January 27, 1942, in Flint, Michigan, to the late George W. Sr., and Evelyn E (Gage) Bigelow. He attended Mt. Morris Consolidated Schools. In 1963, Jake married Nancy Kunstman (later divorced), and together they raised two children. Jake was a hardworking man throughout his life. He shared many stories about working at Johnny's Garage, Leffler's Construction, and Hamady Brothers Grocery as a young man before beginning his 45-year career with General Motors. Jake started at Fisher Body Plant 1 working in various departments throughout the plant spending a majority of his time there working in the Trim Shop. When the plant officially closed, he transferred to the Buick City Complex spending the final 25 years of his career as a firefighter on the complex. He was proud of working alongside his brother, George Jr. "Bill" who also served as a fireman at Buick City. He retired from General Motors in 2006. Additionally, Jake volunteered as a firefighter for the City of Mt. Morris for many years, following in the footsteps of his father, George, who was the city's fire chief and his brother Bill. He was especially proud to serve alongside both his father and brother. Jake was a lifelong car enthusiast whose passion was renewed in retirement. His family encouraged him to pursue that passion which led to his first classic car, a red 1977 Chevrolet Corvette. This “hobby” grew with Jake adding several additional classics to his collection including a several year “build” of a 1956 Chevrolet pickup which won several awards at the trucks first car show and brought him great pride. His hobby extended beyond the garage. He enjoyed attending and supporting many local car shows, where he made lasting friendships with fellow car club friends and enthusiasts who shared his love of classic cars. Beyond cars Jake enjoyed restoring and collecting anything “classic” including vintage travel trailers, gas pumps, vintage outdoor furniture, and an extensive vintage oil can and tire patch collection. Above all, Jake loved spending time with his great friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Philip “Jake” is survived by: Daughter, Karla (Wayne) Phillpotts; Son, Jeff (Stephanie) Bigelow; Grandchildren: Brandon (Brittany) Bigelow, Emma (Brady) Smith, Megan Bigelow, Rachel (Daniel) Charboneau, and Luke Phillpotts; Great grandchildren: Aldon, Landon and Olive Bigelow, Weston and Sutton Smith; Sister in law and friend, Lillian Bigelow; Several nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and dear friends. Jake was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Karen Edwards, and brother, George “Bill” Bigelow.
We sincerely thank Jake’s extensive friend group for their support of our dad!
