Edward John Klapko
Age 92 of Owosso, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Hazel Findlay Country Manor.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Fr. Michael O'Brien officiating. Following the service, Ed will be laid to rest at Oak Wood Cemetery. The family invites friends to join them at Nelson-House Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, from 4 pm until 8 pm, with a rosary service to be prayed at 7 pm.
Ed was born on July 31, 1932, in Owosso, to John and Erma (Bordash) Klapko.
A proud graduate of Owosso High School, he dedicated his early years to serving his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was in active duty for the United States Navy from 1952 to 1956, Ed's last six months of active duty were spent aboard the USS MUNSEE. He was an Active reserve from 1956 to 1960 until being honorably discharged.
Ed went to Damage Control School on Treasure Island in California where he trained for fire fighting aboard ship. He worked in a carpenter shop building blocks to fit ships bottom to lift out of water for repair. He went on Oil Tanker A052 Cacapon where he fueled aircraft carriers, D. escounts, and cargo and ammo ships.
Ed was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and an active participant in the Knights of Columbus. He cherished spending quality time with family and friends especially over games of poker or Euchre. Ed loved hunting, fishing, and camping with his family in Northern Michigan. He enjoyed woodworking and built over 150 buckboard wagons and wheelbarrows that can be seen in yards all over the county.
In September of 1956, he married the love of his life, Martha Morrissey. Together, they created a beautiful family and countless cherished memories before Martha predeceased him on August, 8, 2011.
Ed is survived by his children, Edward (Laurie) Klapko Jr., Mark (Carolyn) Klapko, John (Jane) Klapko, and Laura (Bill) Prevesk; his grandchildren, Jason, Nick, Jessica, and Jacob; and his great-grandchildren, Eli, Adrian, and Harmony.
He is also survived by his siblings: Steve (Mary Kay) Klapko, Janet (Ken) Ackley, John (Brenda) Klapko, and Karen (Darryl) Olszeski, along with other loving family members and friends.
Ed was predeceased by his beloved wife, Martha; his daughter, Cathy Klapko; his parents, John and Erma Klapko; and his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Alvin Dasen.
In honor of his memory, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
