JOHNSON, Leo M. - age 92, of Swartz Creek, died October 19, 2020. A private service will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Leo was born March 9, 1928 in Flint, the son of William B. and Ida R. (Sannas) Johnson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. Leo married Gloria Hemingway on October 22, 1960. He attended Mott Community College, Wayne State University and was a graduate of the F.B.I. Academy in Quantico, VA. After 23 years in the City of Flint Police Department, Leo retired as a Detective Sergeant in charge of Internal Affairs and was previously assigned to the Homicide and Robbery Squads. After retirement, his interest in photography since the mid 1940's led him to join the Flint Journal Photographic Department in 1975. Leo's photographs have won numerous awards in state and national newspapers and magazines prior to joining the Flint Journal. Leo retired from the Flint Journal in 1989 as the Assistant Photo Director. After his second retirement, he and his wife divided their time between a condo in Venice, FL and a condo in Flushing. He remained interested in Nature photography, computers and digital photography. Surviving are: wife, Gloria of Swartz Creek; daughter, Jill Scharfenberg of Traverse City; two sons, Bryan Johnson of Flushing and Bruce Johnson of Madison Heights; two grandchildren, Grant and Hannah Scharfenberg of Traverse City; sister, Norma Campbell of Troy; sister in law, Patricia Hemingway-Hall. of Harbor Springs. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Johnson in 2009. Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
