Atherton, Jean Elizabeth, of Burton (formerly) East Tawas, age 92, passed away January 26, 2026, at The Cottage of Davison. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will be held in the spring. Jean was born March 30, 1933, in Columbus OH, daughter of the late James and Minnie (Seekings) Stewart. She moved to Flint with her parents and graduated from Flint Central High School. Jean was married to her high school sweetheart Carl Atherton on July 16, 1955. They were together for 58 years until he passed away on September 3, 2013. Jean worked as a secretary at AC Spark Plug, and she managed the Flint Fire Fighter Bingo Hall concession stand. She was a member of Davison VFW Post #4087 Auxiliary. Jean always felt very blessed to have so many dear friends in all the different cities she lived: Flint, Burton, East Tawas, MI, and Fort Myers, FL. She enjoyed reading, square dancing, jewelry making and long walks on the beach. Summers in East Tawas and Winters in Fort Myers gave her many great beach days. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Jean is survived by her children Gregory (Cindy) Atherton and Bethany (Leo) Mucha; grandchildren Callie (Nick) Weber, Whitney (Dave) Meerman, Rachel (Matt) Reilly, Lance Mucha; great grandchildren Brayden, Juliana, Graham, Annalise and Charlotte. Several nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Atherton, parents-in-law, Howard and Freda Atherton, sister, Marie Post, sisters-in-law, Arlene Birkam and Carol Goggins, brothers-in-law Fred Birkam, Clifford Post and Buel Lemonds. Niece, Kay Lemonds-Mattar. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of The Cottage of Davison for the excellent care Jean received.
