Don was born on May 10, 1936, in East Tawas, the son of Mary Catherine McCartney. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1960, where he demonstrated and taught others the breakdown of M1 weapons (WWII) to be used in the field. He was also assigned to drive the General. After his service, he moved to Flint and worked at AC Spark Plug for 33 years, where he was recognized with developing inventions that were used. He retired in 1988. After his retirement, he worked at Donaldson & Sons for five years, enjoying the Flushing community and being close to his family and friends.

In his younger years, Don enjoyed roller skating and going to drive-in movies with his children. After retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, making windmills, bird houses, and tables, wallpaper and paint projects and walking the Riverview Trail. Many days, you could find him at Marathon downtown Flushing socializing with his close friend, Don Rider and keeping up with the town happenings. His truck seemed to have his own reserved parking spot. He always had a pocket full of bubble gum, which he gladly handed out to the kids and friends alike. By far, his favorite thing to do was spend time with his family, including his daughter and son-in-law, grandchildren and he had a special place in his heart for the Nurmi family. He always honored his service to our country by proudly flying a flag in the front yard of his home.

Don is survived by his daughter, April and husband Tim Donaldson; step-daughter, Jill and husband Eddie McGinnis; grandchildren, Ryan and wife Heidi Donaldson, Justin and wife Callie Donaldson, Lauren McGinnis; great-grandchildren, Cadence Donaldson, Avery and Pearson Schloegl, and Gradey Donaldson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bethany; son, Donn "Butch" McCartney; mother, Mary Catherine; and his beloved dogs, Angus and Charlie.
