Cathryn passed peacefully with her family by her side after a hard fought battle against lymphoma on November 4, 2019. She was at peace knowing she was going home to meet her Lord and Savior. There will be a day of remembrance on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 from 2-8pm at O’Guinn Funeral Home in Montrose. Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at the United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Genesee Co Humane Society.
Cathryn was born May 12, 1949 the elder twin to the late Neal and Pauline (Thompson) VandeBunt. Cathryn was the middle child of Neal and Pauline. She attended Longfellow Middle School and was a proud graduate of Flint Northern Class of 1967. She then attended Mott Community College before transferring to Central Michigan University to pursue her teaching degree. After graduation she hired in to Carmen-Ainsworth in 1971 starting her career teaching in Rankin. She met her husband Don McIlmurray through her sister Carolyn. They began dating in August 1975 and were married December 20, 1975. Cathryn took a voluntary lay-off from Carmen when they started their family in 1977 and returned to teach Later Multi-Age at Dye Elementary when her youngest started kindergarten. She retired from teaching and Carmen-Ainsworth in 2004. She left Dye-El and saw the end of the multi-age classroom. During her retirement she volunteered at the family business, spent summers in either Ludington or Oscoda, winters in the Florida Keys, primarily Islamorada, began attending a quilting bee with her Dye-El Girls, was a member of the Bunco Babes, the Krazy Kuilters, was able to regularly attend church, volunteered and was the finance chair for the Montrose United Methodist Church and had a basket group she attended and then ran. Cathryn had a very busy robust life filled with love, laughter, family and friends. She will be missed every day by those whose lives she touched.
Cathryn is survived by her husband of 43 years Donald McIlmurray; children Kathleen McIlmurray of Flint; Patrick (Samantha) McIlmurray of Fenton; sister Carolyn (David) Swosinski of Montrose; nephew Scott Kelly of Saginaw, nieces Wendy (Matt) Dorey of Tampa, FL, and Becky (Lisa) Swosinski of Owosso; aunts, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and many, many friends in Michigan, Florida, Washington, Northern Ireland and elsewhere. Cathryn was preceded in death by her parents Neal and Pauline; in-laws Walter and Agnes; sister Susan Kelly, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Profound gratitude and thanks to Dr. Sumana Devata, and the staff of the Rogel Cancer Center, Dr. Sarah Anand, PA Adrienne and the phenomenal nurses and staff of 7W of C. S. Mott Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Dr. Syed Nasser and the wonderful nursing staff of 7B of the University Hospital; Dr. Parul Sud and the amazing staff of McLaren Internal Medicine Residency practice, Michigan Medicine and especially the love and support from the KA staff of Hurley Medical Center ER.
