Darlene Gale Burr (née LaPorte), born October 2, 1934, in Pinconning, Michigan, passed away on July 14, 2026 at the age of 91
Darlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edmund Asa Burr, who passed away on October 10, 1987. The couple married on March 16, 1957, and shared many years of marriage and family life together. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan.
She is survived by her daughters, Tracy Burr of Goodrich, Michigan, and Rebecca Burr of Grand Blanc, Michigan; her son-in-law, Robert Wells; and her cherished grandchildren, Sarah Wolff of Las Vegas, Nevada, her husband Eric, and their son Cedar, and Evan Wells of Plano, Texas, his wife Alyssa, and their son Austin.
Darlene was the daughter of Ernest J. LaPorte and Valetha LaPorte (née Chantigney). She is also survived by her sister, Lenore Carstens, and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Norman LaPorte, Paul LaPorte, and Jonathan LaPorte.
Darlene earned her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and later completed both bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Michigan. She began her professional career with Dow Chemical Company and later entered the field of education during a period of teacher shortages, where she discovered a lifelong calling. She went on to teach elementary school for nearly thirty years, dedicating herself to the education and development of young children.
Quietly committed to the advancement and independence of women, Darlene was also a devoted friend and lifelong learner, known for her intellectual curiosity, quiet strength, independence, and generosity of spirit. She remained deeply engaged with the world around her and, in her later years, traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad, with journeys taking her to Russia, Europe, Egypt, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, and China. She also treasured the winters she spent in Arizona in the company of close friends. Her love of discovery was matched by her devotion to the pursuits that brought her joy, including genealogy, gardening, and quilting.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network, which supports children’s literacy and educational opportunity in the Flint area.
No visitation or funeral service will be held.
