Jeanette Marie Gomos, a beacon of love and resilience, passed away at the age of 80 on February 23, 2026 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit due to surgical complications. Born on November 21, 1945, in Durand, Michigan, she was the cherished daughter of the late Richard and Margaret (Clever) Johnson.
With a heart as expansive as her intellect, Jeanette was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose life was a testament to her faith-filled and thoughtful nature. She was a guiding light in the lives of her devoted children Andrew (Jessica) Gomos, Ann (Todd) Pettyjohn, and Mary (Owen) Shinabarger. Her legacy of love continued to blossom through her adoring grandchildren Drew (Abby) Gomos, Hannah (Caleb) Chadwell, Jacob McDonough, and Jordann (Cardell) Givens, along with her cherished great-grandchildren Griffin and Bryson Gomos; Ellison and Declan Givens. Her memory will continue to be honored by her step-grandson, wife, and her six step-great-grandchildren.
The bond of siblings was incredibly important to Jeanette; she is deeply missed by her sisters Cathy (Jeff) Smith, Barb (Bill) Wilson, and Marta (Kevin) Brady, as well as her brothers Donald (Elaine) Johnson and Dr. James (Pat) Johnson. Her numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends also feel the profound loss of her absence.
Jeanette married the love of her life, Thomas A. Gomos on January 15, 1966 and is now joined in eternal life with her beloved husband who preceded her in death, as did her sister Carole Shaw and brother Douglas Johnson.
Jeanette was an example of lifelong learning and dedication. A proud graduate of Durand High School in 1964, she later pursued her passion for helping others by obtaining a degree with honors in Physical Therapy from the University of Michigan in 1986. Before returning to UofM, Jeanette established an enjoyable career as a realtor in the 1970s. Her professional endeavors culminated in a rewarding 30-year career in Home Health Physical Therapy where she touched and improved countless lives.
An intelligent woman with diverse interests and talents, Jeanette was an avid reader, a culinary enthusiast, an ardent traveler, and even a licensed pilot. Her involvement in the community was extensive, including volunteer work at the DVA and DUSI, where she served as a former board person, membership in the Durand Rotary Club and the Durand High School Alumni Association, lifetime associate of St. Mary Catholic Church in Durand, participation in the Durand Am-Vets Ladies Auxiliary, and professional engagement with the American Physical Therapy Association. Above all, Jeanette was a proud and vocal fan of the Detroit Red Wings, embodying the spirit of camaraderie and team devotion.
True to her Christian faith, Jeanette's life was one of compassion and service, as she generously gave her time and energy to various causes. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel, where Jeanette's life will be celebrated in a manner befitting the remarkable woman she was.
