DEMERLY, Shirley (Alward) – of Davison, age 89, passed away Monday, January 26, 2026, at Charter Assisted Living of Davison. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Road, Davison, MI 48423; Pastor Sarah LaRose-Nettell officiating. Interment will be in Flint Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will welcome visitors from 4-7 PM on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service on Wednesday, beginning at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, in Shirley’s memory.
Shirley was born in Flint, Michigan, on March 23, 1936, the daughter of the late Truman and Julia (LaLonde) Alward. She married the love of her life, Gail Demerly, on June 18, 1955, and he preceded her in death on June 20, 2018. Shirley enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, including bowling, playing bingo, and trips to the casino. She was talented at crocheting blankets, many of which were made with love and care for others. Most of all, she cherished visiting with her neighbors, sharing coffee, conversation, and friendship.
Shirley is survived by her children: Deborah (Russell) Harvey and Denise Lukonen; grandchildren: Nicole (Zach) Cummings, Ryan (Katrina) Harvey, Aaron (Sierra) Harvey, Heather (Ryan) Brown and Zachary Lukonen; great-grandchildren: Addison, Cash, Wyatt, Cheyenne, Hayden, Alex, and Jeramiah; sister, JoAnn Allen; and many other loving family members and friends. She was preceded in death by both parents; husband, Gail Demerly; son-in-law, David Lukonen; siblings: Louise McCann, Bob Alward, Ed Alward, and Bernice Brawner.
