SMETHWICK, Donald L. – of Flint, age 84, passed away November 24, 2014 at Briarwood of Flint. A Funeral Service will be held 11 AM Saturday, November 29, 2014 at First United Church, 1116 W. Hill Rd., Flint; Rev. Charles Davis officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 AM - 2 PM and 4-7 PM Friday at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison and 10 AM until the time of service on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Church.
Donald was born in Flint, MI on March 23, 1930, son of the late William B. and Annie (Pettit) Smethwick. Donald proudly served his country with the U.S. Army. He married Betty Lee Davis on May 5, 1955 in Flint. Donald was a Firefighter with the Flint Fire Department for 25 years. He was a member of First Church of Flint and sang in the choir. Donald was always a jokester and loved to make people laugh.
Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Betty; sons, Bartley (Susan), Brian (Vicky) and Barry of Arizona; grandchildren, Amy and Shane of Flint, Briana, Brittany, Brandon and Mariah of Arizona; five great-grandchildren; sister, Norma (Rev. John) Grantham; sister-in-law, Dorothy Kimmons of Miami, FL; dear friend, Bernard Delongchamp; many nieces, nephews and great friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Leon Davis, Harold Davis and Marvin Kimmons. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Briarwood Nursing Home.
