Helen was born on a homestead farm in Gladstone, North Dakota to Hungarian immigrant parents, John Kramer & Agnes Bogner. She was the 7th of 11 children, spending some of her most cherished years playing of her home state. When she was 14 years old her parents pulled up stakes in the wake of the Great Depression and moved to her much-loved California, where they started a chicken farm north of San Francisco in Sonoma County.
Helen met the love of her life, a dashing Navy man, Harold at a USO dance in Sacramento, California and they were married on Dec 2, 1944. She and Harold were married 66 years when he passed in Feb, 2011. After the war ended, Harold & Helen moved to Michigan, first to Owosso and then onto Grand Blanc, living in an apartment on his parent’s farm until they could take possession of their own 120 acre parcel south of Grand Blanc. There they raised 6 children.
Helen might have been considered a “homemaker” but she was also a devoted wife and mother. Each one of her children was special in her eyes and she and Harold asked that each made a contribution to the family, working in the fields, and generally being good citizens. Helen was a devout Catholic and raised all the children following typical Catholic traditions. In retirement Harold & Helen spent winters in Venice, FL and traveled the world. Together, they explored the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Australia and Alaska! Helen was a resident of Abbey Park for 13 years before moving into assisted living at The Oaks of Woodfield one year ago.
Helen was blessed with good health all her life, outliving all her siblings, who kept in close contact—they were much loved by Helen, and she continued to enjoy hearing from her nieces and nephews over the years. She was a devoted member of Holy Family church since 1951.
Helen is survived by all six of her children, David Roberts (Wanda), Richard Roberts (Patti), Ronald Roberts (Sharon), Mary Roberts (Ronald McCoy), Janice Roberts, Brian Roberts (Jan). 7 grandchildren: Tracie Fernandez, Brent Roberts (Bahar), Jeremey Roberts (Christine), Jason Roberts (Bris), Brandi Roberts, Lindsey Roberts (Kelly) and Jett (Max) Roberts. And was blessed with 11 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews spread from Michigan to California.
We would like to thank her companion, care-giver and best friend in her later years, Libby Pittenger and the amazing staff at The Oaks of Woodfield assisted living for their kind and compassionate care.
I lieu of flowers contributions can be made to St Mark Catholic Church (envelopes available at the church) or to a charity of one’s choice.
