Thayer, Ronald Ellwood, age 88, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 16th, 2026 in Mansfield, Ohio.

Ronald was born in Flushing, Michigan on July 29, 1937 to Charles and Frieda (Schipansky) Thayer. He graduated from Owosso High School in Owosso, Michigan and Eastern Bible Institute in Green Lane, Pennsylvania. Ronald met the love of his life, Nancy Hughes, while attending EBI, and they wed on October 10, 1959. They were inseparable from the start, sharing a beautiful union of nearly 67 years. Their overflowing love for each other was only surpassed by that of their Heavenly Father. Together, they embarked on a dedicated ministry journey spanning nearly four decades, sharing the good news of Jesus’ love. Ronald pastored various churches in New York and Michigan, including the Flint Citadel Salvation Army. In retirement, Ron served as an Interim Pastor and provided spiritual care and guidance as an on-call Chaplain at Hurley Hospital in Flint. Ron enjoyed leading hymns and worship songs, sometimes with many parishioners gathering in their own home, with Nancy at the piano and Ron leading the singing. Their love of worship music continued till the very end, as Ron’s favorite past time in his final years was quietly listening to Nancy worship through playing the piano and Ron singing. Along with being a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and Pastor, Ron also held a management position for GM Truck & Bus in Flint, Michigan, where he retired after 30 years of corporate service. Never being at ease with the idea of being idle, post-retirement, Ron also worked several years for EDS in Flint, Michigan.
Ronald Ellwood Thayer will be remembered for his unmatched sense of humor, his unwavering faith, his dedicated prayer life and constant communion with God. His desire was for all his loved ones to intimately be in relationship with Jesus. Ron had a profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Ronald is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Philip (Pam) of Oscoda, MI, Margaret (Jeff) Sauser of Kalamazoo, MI, Vonda (Philip) Karnazes of Grand Rapids, MI, and Kerstin (Chad) Wilson of Lexington, OH;18 grandchildren;16 great grandchildren; 4 great, great grandchildren; his sisters, Donna Swerdan and Shirley (Carl) Norberg and many nieces and nephews.
