Jeriel R. Ponder, 94 from Flint MI. passed away on May 1, 2021 from a car accident. Always being on the go and that is how he went. He was born in Kennett, MO. on May 31, 1926 to Thomas and Viva Ponder, one of 11 children. He moved to Flint, MI. at 18 mo. old where he was raised. Jerry went to Flint Northern H.S. and went off to serve our country in World War II from 1943-46. He returned to Flint to marry Clara McCurdy on July 4, 1947 at First Presbyterian Church with fireworks and a Frankenmuth dinner reception. They had two children and raised them in the house they chose out of a Sears catalog. He retired from Buick after 43 years. He loved being from Flint and watching the changes over the years. He held season tickets to Flint hockey games sitting in section 3 at the IMA Sports Arena. He would tailgate at the University of Michigan football games, even following them to the Rose Bowl and the Citrus bowl. Jerry loved a parade and would stand proudly as the flag passed. He canoed the Au Sable River and enjoyed going to his cabin in East Tawas. He loved to travel all over the USA, Mexico and Hawaii and across the seas, but his favorite place to go was back to his roots in Branson, MO. He generously donated to many charities over the years. He was part of the American Red Cross 100 gallon club, giving to the blind, and St. Jude. He belonged to the Teamsters local 332 Union and was a proud member of the First Presbyterian Church where he had many friends and church family. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Jerielynn Bennett, Lorielynn & (Richard) Keeney Sr., son-in-law, Steve Bennett, 5 grand children, Steve & (Susan) Bennett II, Jeriel & (Sarah) Keeney, Stephanie & (Jesse) Preston, Jeniel & (Michael) Payne Jr., Richiel Keeney, 16 great-grandchildren, Dakota & (Cassie) Payne, Christian, Grace & Noelle Bennett, John Dunavan, Holden Bennett, Max & (Madison), Jayden, Jordyn, Ava, & Josiah Keeney, Brandon, Makenna, Peyton, Trenton & Journee Edwards, and 3 great- great-grandchildren, Taylor & Silas Payne, Covina Keeney, many friends and family; he kept the Ponder family reunions alive. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, all of his siblings, and his great granddaughter Lillian Dunavan. Visitation will be held 12-8pm Sunday, May 9, 2021 at Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Rd. Grand Blanc, MI. Masks are required for attendance and all Covid rules will apply. His celebration of life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 746 S. Saginaw St., Flint, MI. on Monday, May 10, 2021 with viewing from 12-1pm, until the time of service. Rev. Paul Ytterock & Rev. Dr. Joseph Novak will be officiating. He will be laid to rest, following his parade, at Crestwood Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers please give to the First Presbyterian Church Music fund.
