SMITH, SHERRY – Of Flint, age 70, passed away Monday, May 4, 2026.

Sherry Marlene Smith (Johnson) graduated from Carman High School in 1973, where she received her diploma and the CO-OP Student of the Year award.

When Sherry met me, David Smith, in January 1975 she was a Job-Daughter Honor Queen, a Queen who soon became the love of my life, and the mother of our two sons, David Lantz Smith Jr. and Walter Edward Smith who is married to Kimberly Kay Smith (Brookshire).

As time passed, she also became the loving Nana of our five wonderful grandchildren. Melony Ann Smith-Thompson, Walter Edward Smith Jr., Kaytlynn Mary Brookshire, Hayden Harold Wheeler, and Eli Nicholas Smith.

Sherry and I were married on March 5, 1977. We enjoyed 49 years of marriage until her death on May 4, 2026. Surrounded by family, Sherry passed peacefully at the UofM Hospital in Ann Arbor Michigan after 40+ days of hospitalization.

Sherry was preceded in death by her parents Walter H. and Billie M. Johnson (Rhodes).

Sherry is survived by a sister, Marsha Barber, two brothers, Walter D. Johnson and wife Nancy, Steven Johnson and wife Terri, plus two sister-in-law’s Sandy Smith and Lorna Smith. Nieces and Nephews: Gordon Barber, Stacy Lucas, Karen Moraczewski, Troy Barber, Aaron Johnson, Bryan Johnson, Brad Johnson, Brad Tippett, Jan Jacques, Trixy Sue Little, Ron Smith, Doug Smith, Cheryl Blosser, Terry Ramon, Mary Smith, Dale Smith, Donnie Smith, Scott Smith, Leslie Smith, Mike Smith, Shawn Smith, Pat Smith, Cathy Horton, James Smith, Lynette Smith, and Leslie Braun.

Special friends, Leslie Hansen, Noralyn Arnold, Sandy Sellers, Debbie Zokoe, Connie Shinabarger, Jean Johnson, Kelly Palmer, and Jane Starkel.

Sherry cared for my mother in our home till mom passed and soon after that she brought her mother into the home. During this time, she started driving her mother to Burton Senior Center to attend her mother’s functions, bingo, day trips and some overnight trips, too.

She made so many friends there that she volunteered to man the service desk two days a week plus offered help with many other daily functions. She loved to spend time there and grew to love all the wonderful new friends she had made. My heart goes out to all the beautiful people there that make the Burton Senior Center the amazing social haven that it is.

When our children started school at St. Mark Lutheran, Flint, Sherry took a position there as Latch-Key director and worked for many years until an accidental workplace fall injured her spine and prevented her from performing the job any longer. The Latch-Key children she so lovingly cared for all made a permanent place in their hearts for her and she received invitations to their graduations, weddings, plus all the chance encounters in public places where they would see her then call out her name and run to hug and talk to her. She was a rock for them in their time of need and they never forgot her. She was the rock for our family, too. She is loved, missed, mourned, and thought of constantly. She was the strongest and most loving person I have ever met.
