PINTAR, Harold R. “Hal” – of Clio, age 93, died on Friday, January 7, 2022, at Gross Assisted Living in Clio. Honoring his wishes, cremation will be taking place. Inurnment will be held in Great Lakes National Cemetery in the spring.
Hal was born on August 6, 1928, in Flint, Michigan, to the late Joseph and Katherine (Miller) Pintar. He graduated from Flint Northern in 1947, joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1947 until 1951, and enrolled at Michigan State College in 1951. Hal stayed at MSU for a year and then took a job at Chevrolet - Flint Assembly in the time office. In 1954 he married Agnes Borsenick and in 1960, moved to Ypsilanti and finished his degree, graduating with honors. Hal then began his career with the U.S. Treasury Department as a U.S. Customs Agent. During his career, as a federal employee, he worked in Detroit, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. In LA he was an import specialist and the district director of customs at LAX, specializing in Persian rug imports. Upon his retirement, Hal and his wife, Gunilla who he married in 1978, moved to Scottsville, Oregon on the banks of his beloved Umpqua River. The year he turned 70, he swam across the river and back – approximately a ¼ mile. Hal had a special love for dogs and cats and loved people. He was always an active volunteer wherever he could be helpful. In Oregon he volunteered at St. John’s Church, the chamber of commerce, hospice, and would help any friend or neighbor in need.
Hal was a caring husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all. Surviving are: Brothers: Joe Pintar (partner Linda Bryson), and Mike Pintar; Sister in law, Louise Clausen in Sweden, and relatives in Croatia. He was also preceded in death by: Wife, Gunilla; Sister, Margaret (David) Emery; Nephews: David Emery, and Joe Emery; Niece, Liz Emery; Many uncles and aunts. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Gross Assisted Living for all the love and special care they gave Hal over the last 8 years.
