Anna Helena Sleno

Born: 1/4/1933
Died: 6/24/2026
Age: 93
Community: Flushing, MI

Anna Helena Sleno, 93, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her “favorite kids” on Wednesday, June 24 at the University of Michigan hospital. Anna was the youngest of nine children and was born on January 4, 1933, in Maple Grove Township to Henry and Anna (Quaderer) Keeler.

Growing up on a farm and orchard, Anna learned the value of hard work and the importance of family. After graduating in 1950 from Maple Grove High School as the class valedictorian, she moved to Saginaw where she held various office/factory jobs at Lufkin Rule, A.T. Ferrell, R.P. Lewis and US Graphite.

Anna met James (Jim) Sleno of Easton at a polka dance and they decided to start a future together in 1964, a marriage that would endure for 59 and a half years. After they married, Anna and Jim moved to rural Flushing where Anna was a wife and mother on the family’s centennial farm. For the next 62 years, she could usually be found working in her flower beds or in her kitchen where she played solitaire while waiting for the evening’s dessert to finish baking. She took pride in feeding her family and doing her part to keep the farm running smoothly whether that was sewing up a pair of torn pants, taking someone to a field, or even driving tractors. Her joy was to be with her family; relatives and friends will recall many holiday dinners around her table and Sunday afternoon visits. A decades-long member of St. Robert Bellarmine parish, she had a steadfast faith which supported her until her last day.

She was preceded in death by her husband James in 2024 and by her two infant daughters, Mary and Helen, as well as many siblings and in-laws: Sister Ann Henry Keeler, Katie (Ted) Marek, Louise (Ed) Byrne, Joe (Helen) Keeler, Hank Keeler, Susie (Bill) McCarty, Mary (Al) Shawl, Herb (Phyllis) Keeler, Marie Sleno, Margaret (Neal) Saffer, and Pat Whalen.

She is survived by her daughter Karen and son Bill, both of Flushing; her brother-in-law Larry Whalen of Waterford; by many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A funeral mass for Anna Sleno will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 3 at St. Robert’s Bellarmine Catholic Church, located at 310 N Cherry St, Flushing. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Following mass, Anna will be taken to her final place of rest at St. Robert’s Catholic Cemetery.
