Joseph Patrick Metz, M.D., passed away on October 16, 2020.

He was surrounded in his final days by his loving and devoted family.

Joe was born on March 22, 1947, in Wayne, New Jersey, a small town near Manhattan. Joe excelled in his youth at everything he tried, but he was an especially gifted student and sportsman. Summers were spent playing baseball and swimming in the Packanack Lake. After a standout high-school career as a catcher, Joe continued playing at Duke University. He graduated from Duke and then attended the Medical University of Graz in Austria. Even while studying so far away, his love for sports and his hometown New York Yankees never faded.

Joe came to Flint in 1976 to begin a residency in Family Medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He then embarked on a 37-year career in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hurley Medical Center and McLaren. His influence and impact on the field is immeasurable. Among his many professional achievements, Joe led the OB/GYN residency program at Hurley, mentoring waves of young physicians. His teachings—and his sense of humor—will stay with them for the rest of their careers. Joe’s memory will also live on in the hearts and minds of the countless families for whom he delivered into this world a healthy baby. Joe’s gift was bringing into this world their greatest gift.

In his later years, Joe especially loved relaxing and playing cards with his family, visiting them, cooking for them, woodworking, his goldendoodles, and Michigan football—even if Michigan football didn’t always love him back. He was tremendously proud of everything his family had accomplished. He knew that great things lie ahead for them.
Joe is survived by his wife, Cathy; his children, Eric, Amanda, Annsley, Ashley, and Mark, and their spouses; his grandchildren, Georgia, Ryan, Brendan, and Margaret; his sister, Linda, and her children, Kate and Drew.

His family will celebrate his life with a memorial service on Monday, October 19 at Flushing United Methodist Church. In memoriam gifts may be made to the Church’s capital projects fund.
