Joseph A. Taylor, 81, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025 in Henderson, Nevada. A devoted family man, distinguished veteran, and accomplished business leader, Joe leaves behind a legacy of service, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to his community and loved ones.
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Joe proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force, earning an honorable discharge. He pursued his education with determination, earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Chicago State University and his Master of Business Administration from Governors State University.
In 1977, Joe brought his considerable talents and vision to Michigan, where he would spend the next 48 years making an indelible mark on the state he came to call home. His professional accomplishments were numerous and varied, reflecting his versatility and commitment to economic development. Joe served as Executive Director of the Muskegon County Economic Development Commission, held trustee positions with the Greater Muskegon Industrial Fund, and directed the Flint Area Chamber of Commerce Business Assistance Center. His expertise in business development led him to direct the Michigan Department of Commerce Small Business Assistance Center Program, where he helped countless entrepreneurs realize their dreams.
Joe's financial acumen was recognized throughout his career, serving as Senior Investment Analyst for the Michigan Department of Treasury Retirement System, Director of the Blue Care Network of Eastern Michigan, and Director of Private Equity Investments for Munder Capital Management. Beyond his corporate roles, he generously shared his knowledge as an educator, teaching at both Muskegon Community College and Mott Community College including serving on its planning and small business advisory committees.
Known as "Billy" to his family, Joe loved fishing and gardening. Above all, Joe was a devoted family man who found his greatest joy in those he loved. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Louise Taylor, and beloved wife, Elner, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. He is survived by his three children: Samella (Samuel) Taylor Lewis, Jason (Sarah) Taylor, and Justin Taylor, as well as his cherished grandchildren, Brandon Lewis and Yaara Taylor.
Those who knew Joe will remember him as a man of remarkable wisdom and experience. Joe's 81 years were marked by service—to his country, his state, his community, and most importantly, to his family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the businesses he helped build, and the family he raised with such love and devotion.
